X-Ray Baggage Scanner Product
Overview
An X-ray baggage scanner is the tunnel-shaped machine at airport, courthouse, and mailroom checkpoints that lets a screener see inside a closed bag without opening it. A bag rides a conveyor belt through a lead-shielded tunnel; inside, a fan of X-rays passes through it and onto a detector array, and the machine turns the result into a color image on the operator's screen.
The bag enters through the Inspection Tunnel, whose lead-rubber entry and exit curtains and lead-sheet lining keep the radiation sealed inside so the operator standing alongside receives a negligible dose. The Belt Conveyor moves the bag through at a steady 0.2 m/s, which fixes the scan speed and therefore the along-belt image resolution. As the bag crosses the beam, the X-Ray Generator illuminates it and the L-Shaped Detector Array reads how much radiation gets through, line by line, building the image one vertical slice at a time. The Image-Processing Computer reconstructs and enhances that image and presents it at the Operator Console, where threat-detection software color-codes materials and flags suspicious densities for the screener.
Color is the point of the dual-energy design: organic materials (explosives, drugs, food) render orange, metals blue, and intermediate materials green. A screener reads shape and color together to decide whether a bag needs a hand search.
How it works
When a bag breaks the entry photoeye on the Belt Conveyor, the control board enables the X-Ray Generator. Its sealed X-ray tube fires a continuous beam that a collimator shapes into a thin vertical fan aligned with the detector. The fan passes through the bag and strikes the L-Shaped Detector Array, an L-shaped line of detector modules that wraps two walls of the tunnel so it captures the full cross-section in one pass. Each module pairs a scintillator crystal with a photodiode; a thin copper filter splits the readings into a low- and a high-energy channel, and the ratio between them tells the machine the atomic number of whatever the ray passed through — that is what lets it tell an organic mass from a metal one.
The detector's data-acquisition boards digitize every channel once per scan line and stream the numbers to the Image-Processing Computer, which stacks the lines into a full image as the belt advances, applies edge enhancement and the dual-energy color map, and runs the automatic threat-detection pass. The result lands on the display of the Operator Console. Throughout, the radiation safety sensors confirm the beam stays contained and light the X-ray-on beacons, and an emergency stop on the control board cuts the tube and belt instantly if an interlock opens.
