SWAT Tactical Vehicle

Product

Overview

A SWAT tactical vehicle is an armored truck that delivers a police tactical team to a dangerous scene and then serves as mobile cover while the team works. It sits between an ordinary police van and a military armored carrier: heavy enough to stop rifle fire, but built on a commercial chassis and fitted out for law enforcement tasks such as serving high-risk warrants, ending barricade situations, and rescuing hostages. The design priority is protecting the people inside while keeping the vehicle simple enough for a city police department to maintain.

The vehicle is built around the Armored Crew Capsule, a sealed steel capsule carried on a heavy Truck Chassis. The Powertrain has to move that armored mass at useful speed, the Access and Breaching System lets the team enter and exit under cover, and the Protection Systems keep the vehicle running after it takes fire.

Armor and structure

Protection comes from the Armored Crew Capsule. Its Hull Armor Plate panels are rolled homogeneous armor steel, typically 8 to 12 mm thick, welded into a capsule and angled so that an incoming round meets more effective material than the plate thickness alone. The Belly Floor Plate guards against fragments thrown up from the road, and the Roof Plate carries the cutouts for the hatches. Where the crew needs to see out, the steel gives way to a Ballistic Vision Block vision block, a glass and polycarbonate laminate 40 to 60 mm thick that stops the same threat as the surrounding plate.

Inside, a Spall Liner of aramid fabric lines the armor. When a bullet strikes the outside, small fragments spall off the inner face at high speed; the liner catches them so they cannot wound the occupants. Eight Firing Port openings let officers return fire through sealed, hinged ports without breaking the armor envelope.

Chassis and powertrain

The capsule rides on a commercial heavy-truck Truck Chassis. Two deep Frame Rail members tied by Cross Member braces form a ladder frame that carries the loaded weight without flexing. The Front Steer Axle steers and drives, the Rear Drive Axle carries most of the armor mass, and uprated Leaf Spring Pack packs with Shock Absorber dampers keep the ride controlled. Wheel hubs turn on Ball Bearing sets sized for the gross weight.

Pulling all of this is the Powertrain. A Turbodiesel Engine of 7 to 9 litres makes the low-speed torque needed to climb curbs and pull out of soft ground, feeding a torque-converter Automatic Transmission and a two-speed Transfer Case that splits drive through twin Drive Shaft units. Fuel comes from a Self-Sealing Fuel Tank lined to self-seal a bullet hole, and a large Cooling Pack rejects the heat the heavy vehicle makes at low speed.

Access and deployment

The Access and Breaching System decides how fast and how safely the team gets out. Hinged Side Armored Door panels and a wide Rear Exit Door let officers dismount behind the body, while Roof Hatch openings serve for escape and overwatch. A powered Door Actuator helps swing the heavy doors and holds them open on a slope.

Two tools extend the vehicle's reach. The front Hydraulic Breaching Ram is a hydraulic arm that shoves vehicles and barricades aside or opens a gap. The Deployment Platform is a folding arm that lifts officers to a second-storey window while keeping them behind ballistic cover.

Sensors and communications

The Sensor and Lighting Suite gives the crew eyes outside the armor. Several Surround Day Camera units stitch a surround view for the driver, a roof Thermal Imager finds people by body heat through smoke and dark, and a pneumatic Telescoping Camera Mast raises it for over-wall observation. The crew watch the feeds on a Crew Display, and Scene Flood Light floods illuminate the area.

The Communications Suite keeps the team linked. A multi-band Tactical Radio Set reaches command and other units on encrypted channels, a wired Crew Intercom lets the crew talk over engine and siren noise, and the Public Address and Siren issues commands to subjects outside.

Staying mobile under fire

The Protection Systems keep the vehicle working when attacked. A Run-Flat Tyre carries the truck many kilometres after being shot flat. The Overpressure Filter Unit pushes filtered air into the cabin so tear gas and smoke stay out, the roof Smoke Grenade Launcher screens a withdrawal, and a Fire Suppression Unit unit guards the engine bay.

Crew compartment

Inside the Crew Interior, each officer rides in a Crew Seat on energy-absorbing mounts, sized for full body armor. A Weapon Rack secures rifles and breaching tools, a heavy Cabin HVAC Unit keeps the sealed cabin habitable during long standoffs, and a Equipment Locker holds medical and breaching kit. The result is a vehicle that can drive a team into a gunfight, shelter them, and bring them back out.
