Prison Transport Van

Product

Overview

A prison transport van moves detainees and convicted prisoners between custody locations, courts, police stations, and prisons. Its design priority is to keep the people in the back secure and separated while keeping them safe during the journey. Inside the reinforced body are individual cell compartments, each holding one person, controlled and monitored by a crew riding in a separate cab. Operators are prison services, police forces, and private custody contractors.

The van is built on a commercial chassis cab, typically in the 3.5 to 7.5 tonne class, with the standard diesel driveline retained and a custom secure body fitted in place of a normal cargo box. The security features add a central locking system, surveillance, and controlled ventilation that an ordinary van does not have.

Secure body shell

The secure body is the outer envelope that must resist escape and damage. Its wall panels are steel sandwiches with an anti-pry liner, so they cannot be kicked out or peeled open from inside. The floor is anti-slip tread plate and the roof is reinforced. Access is through twin secure rear doors fitted with deadlocks, an observation hatch, and tamper-resistant security hinges whose pins cannot be driven out from outside.

Cell compartments

The defining feature is the array of cell compartments. Each cell pod is a moulded glass-reinforced plastic liner with smooth anti-ligature surfaces so an occupant cannot use fittings to self-harm or conceal items. A moulded seat and a three-point restraint belt secure the occupant during travel. Each cell closes with a cell door that has a hardened lock and a polycarbonate vision panel so the crew can check the occupant without opening the door. Aisle partitions keep the central walkway separated from the cells.

Security and locking

The security system controls who can open what and when. A lock control unit in the cab drives an electric lock actuator on each cell, so the crew releases occupants one at a time without entering the cell area. A crew barrier gate separates the cab from the cells, and a key safe holds manual override keys. For fire or collision, an emergency release lets the crew open all cells quickly while still preventing the occupants themselves from triggering it.

Surveillance and communication

The electrical and surveillance system lets the crew monitor occupants without physical contact. A camera watches each cell, feeding a central digital video recorder that logs the whole journey for evidence and welfare review. A cell intercom lets occupants call the crew, and a two-way radio keeps the crew in contact with their control room. Power comes from twin batteries charged by the alternator.

Ventilation and climate

Because occupants are locked in small sealed compartments, the ventilation and HVAC system is a safety requirement, not a comfort feature. Forced ventilation blowers push fresh air through ducts to each cell so air never goes stale, a cell heater and air conditioner keep the temperature in a safe band, and tamper-proof grilles cover every vent so they cannot be blocked or used to pass items.

Materials and welfare design

Material choices reflect both security and the duty of care owed to occupants. The body walls use a steel sandwich with an anti-pry liner so they resist forced escape, while the cell interiors use moulded glass-reinforced plastic shaped to remove ligature points and sharp edges. Vision panels are polycarbonate rather than glass because it resists breakage and cannot be turned into a weapon. Restraint belts, padded where they contact the occupant, hold each person safely during heavy braking or a collision, since an unrestrained occupant in a small hard cell would be injured in an impact. Vent grilles are stainless steel and fixed so they cannot be removed or used to pass contraband between cells.

Variants

Vans differ mainly by size and by the mix of occupants they carry. A small police-station shuttle on a 3.5 t base may have four cells, while a court-run vehicle on a 7.5 t chassis carries ten or twelve. Some layouts include a larger compartment for occupants who must be carried in a wheelchair or who need extra space, and high-security versions for category-A prisoners add stronger panels, more cameras, and a reinforced crew cell. Fleets that run long inter-prison transfers add a toilet compartment and more substantial climate control than a short urban shuttle needs.

Driveline and use

The driveline keeps the donor van's inline-4 turbo diesel of around 3 L and a 6-speed automatic transmission, with hydraulic disc brakes and ABS. In daily service the van collects detainees from one secure site, locks each into a separate cell, monitors them by camera and intercom throughout the drive, and releases them under controlled conditions at the destination. The combination of individual cells, central locking, surveillance, and forced ventilation lets a small crew move several people who must be kept apart from each other in a single vehicle.
