Military Transport Aircraft

Product

Overview

A military transport aircraft moves troops, vehicles, and supplies into places a civil freighter cannot reach: short runways, unpaved strips, and combat zones. The whole design serves loading and unloading heavy cargo fast and operating from rough fields, which is why it has a high wing, a Rear Loading Ramp at the back, and a Landing Gear built for dirt rather than smooth tarmac. This airframe uses four Turboprop Engine turboprops on a high High Wing, a wide pressurised Fuselage with a strengthened floor, and a Cargo Handling System sized to roll vehicles straight on and to drop pallets by parachute in flight.

Propulsion

Turboprops suit the airlift mission because they pull hard at low speed, which shortens the takeoff run from a short or soft field, and they burn less fuel at the moderate cruise speeds these aircraft fly. Each Turboprop Engine is a free-turbine turboprop: a Axial Compressor and Gas Generator Turbine form the gas generator, a separate Free Power Turbine drives the Propeller Reduction Gearbox, and that gearbox steps the speed down to turn a six-blade composite Propeller. The propeller blades can feather to reduce drag if an engine fails and can reverse pitch to brake the aircraft on landing, which helps it stop on a short strip. Mounting the engines high on the wing keeps the props clear of debris thrown up from an unpaved runway.

Wing and structure

The High Wing sits on top of the fuselage so the cargo floor can be low to the ground for loading and so the props stay clear of obstacles. It carries large double-slotted Double-Slotted Flap flaps that let the aircraft fly slowly enough to land in a short distance, plus Spoiler Panel panels that dump lift on touchdown so the wheels grip immediately. The Fuselage is a pressurised tube with a Reinforced Cargo Floor reinforced with Cargo Tie-Down Fitting tie-down rings and Roller Conveyor Tray conveyor trays for palletised loads. A pressurised cabin lets it fly high enough to clear weather and to carry passengers in comfort over long legs.

Cargo handling

The defining feature is the Cargo Handling System. The Rear Loading Ramp lowers to the ground so a truck or an armoured vehicle drives straight in, and it doubles as the platform for an air drop. For heavy single items a Cargo Winch drags loads up the ramp. In flight the Airdrop Extraction Rail extraction rails let a parachute pull palletised cargo out the open back, delivering supplies to troops with no runway at all. The floor's roller trays and tie-downs let a small loadmaster crew reconfigure the hold for vehicles, pallets, seated troops, or stretchers within minutes.

Flight deck and avionics

The Flight Deck is a two-pilot glass cockpit. A Flight Management System flight management system flies planned routes, a Weather Radar paints storms ahead, and a INS/GPS Navigator navigator keeps position without ground aids over open ocean or hostile territory. The aircraft is receiver-capable for air refueling through a Air Refueling Probe, which extends its range for strategic missions. Military transports add defensive systems on top of the civil avionics core: missile warning sensors and a chaff and flare dispenser to defeat shoulder-fired missiles during low approaches into a contested field.

Landing gear and field operations

The Landing Gear is what lets the aircraft use airfields a jet airliner could not. Each Main Gear Bogie main gear bogie carries several wheels to spread the weight, so the high-flotation tires do not sink into soft ground, and the gear retracts into fuselage fairings rather than the wing to keep the cargo hold clear. Carbon Carbon Wheel Brake brakes and propeller reverse let it stop in a short distance. The gear and the powerful flaps together give a takeoff run near 1,100 metres loaded, short enough for forward strips close to where the cargo is needed.

Systems, fuel, and roles

The Aircraft Systems group bundles four-channel Hydraulic System, a Electrical System system fed by engine generators, a Pressurisation & Air Conditioning pressurisation and air-conditioning pack, and an Auxiliary Power Unit auxiliary power unit that starts the engines and runs systems on the ground without external support, which matters at a bare field with no ground equipment. Fuel sits in integral Integral Wing Tank tanks across the wing. The same airframe serves many roles: a baseline cargo and troop carrier, a paratroop transport using the Paratroop Door side doors, an aeromedical evacuation fit with stretcher racks, an aerial tanker that passes fuel to other aircraft, and search-and-rescue or firefighting variants that drop equipment or retardant. Because it is built to take abuse from rough strips and to be loaded and turned around quickly, the type tends to stay in service for decades, with avionics and engines upgraded while the airframe carries on.
