Self-Propelled Howitzer

Product

Overview

A self-propelled howitzer mounts a full-size field gun on an armored, tracked chassis so that artillery can move with mechanized forces, shoot, and displace before counter-battery fire arrives. The modern 155 mm/52 class fires standard NATO projectiles to roughly 30 km, and to about 40 km with base-bleed or rocket-assisted rounds, while carrying its own ammunition, navigation, and ballistic computation. The vehicle is built around one demanding cycle: stop, locate itself, compute a firing solution, lay the gun, fire several rounds, and drive off, all in well under a minute. Everything in the Fire Control System and Autoloader exists to compress that cycle.

The platform is four problems stacked on one hull. A gun that develops chamber pressures near 400 MPa must be carried without shaking the vehicle apart. The recoil of that gun, tens of tonnes of force, must be absorbed by the structure rather than the crew. Heavy ammunition must be moved from storage into the breech fast and safely. And the whole assembly must survive splinters, small arms, and mine blast while staying mobile across country.

Armament

The Main Armament centers on the Gun Barrel, a 52-caliber autofrettaged tube about 8 m long, chrome-lined to survive past 1500 effective full charges. At the breech end the Breech Mechanism uses a sliding Breech Block sealed by an Obturator Pad pad, fired through the Firing Mechanism. At the muzzle the Muzzle Brake redirects propellant gas sideways to cut recoil by roughly a third, and the Bore Evacuator scavenges combustion gases forward so they vent at the muzzle instead of into the crew space when the breech opens.

Recoil energy goes into the Recoil System. The Recoil Buffer cylinders meter oil through orifices to dissipate energy as heat over an 800 mm stroke, and the nitrogen-charged Recuperator returns the gun to battery. The whole assembly pivots on the Gun Cradle, whose trunnions define the elevation axis.

Turret and laying

The gun lives in the Turret, a welded Turret Shell of rolled homogeneous armor riding on the Turret Slewing Ring. The Traverse Drive meshes a pinion with that ring for full 360° rotation, and the Elevation Drive lifts the cradle to about +70° for high-angle fire over terrain or walls. Crew work from blast-attenuating Crew Seat and enter through armored Crew Hatch units sealed against the overpressure system.

Loading

A trained crew cannot keep up an 8-round burst by hand, so the Autoloader does it. The Projectile Magazine is a powered Magazine Carousel holding around 40 projectiles, each held by a Shell Clamp against cross-country shock. The commanded round is lifted by the Projectile Hoist onto the Loading Tray, then the Chain Rammer drives it into the forcing cone using a Rammer Chain that goes rigid in compression, avoiding an oversized linear actuator behind the breech.

Propellant is handled separately. Modern guns use modular charges, so the Charge Magazine stores increments in a Charge Cell Block block behind a blast-isolating Charge Door. The Loader Controller sequences magazine indexing, hoist, ramming, and breech operation with interlocks, using dual Microcontroller channels so a single fault cannot fire or ram unsafely.

Fire control

The Fire Control System is what makes the gun autonomous. The Inertial Navigation Unit gives the vehicle its own position and barrel pointing without external survey, so the gun can fire from an unprepared spot. The Ballistic Computer solves the firing problem from target grid, charge, projectile type, and meteorological data, then commands the traverse and elevation servos. A Muzzle Velocity Radar measures each shot, letting the computer correct the next round for barrel wear and charge-to-charge spread. Crew confirm the solution on the Gun Display Unit through its Sealed Keypad, and a Panoramic Sight remains as an optical backup if the electronic chain fails.

Mobility and survivability

The Armored Hull carries everything on a welded Hull Structure with a mine-resistant Floor Armor belly and a Driver Station forward. Motive power comes from the removable Powerpack: a Diesel Engine near 750 kW coupled to a Cross-Drive Transmission that provides regenerative steering to both tracks, cooled by the Cooling Pack. The Running Gear runs on torsion-bar suspension: each Road Wheel sprung by a Torsion Bar, with Rotary Damper units at the end stations and the Track Assembly driven by the Drive Sprocket.

Survivability beyond armor comes from the Auxiliary Systems: the NBC Protection System holds the crew compartment at overpressure through an NBC Filter, the Fire Suppression System floods the engine bay within milliseconds of a Flame Detector trigger, and a Auxiliary Power Unit powers fire control during silent watch with the main engine off. Wheeled variants trade some cross-country capability and protection for cheaper road mobility, but share the same gun, autoloader, and fire-control architecture.
