Overview

A destroyer is a fast, long-endurance surface combatant built to screen larger ships, control the air and undersea picture around a task force, and carry out independent strike and patrol missions. This class displaces 9000 to 10,000 tonnes at full load, runs about 155 m long on a 20 m beam, and reaches 30 knots or more. It is larger and more heavily armed than a frigate: it carries roughly twice the missile cells, a heavier main gun, a more powerful phased-array radar, and a full aviation facility.

The ship combines several major systems. The Hull and Superstructure provides the structure and survivability, the Propulsion Plant plant drives it through the water, the Vertical Launch System Group groups and the Main Gun Mount deliver the firepower, and the Combat Management System ties the sensors and weapons together into one engagement chain.

Hull and structure

The Hull and Superstructure is an all-welded steel structure. A high-tensile Keel and Frames skeleton carries the global bending loads while welded Hull Plating forms the watertight envelope. The hull is divided by Watertight Bulkheads into about fifteen compartments so that flooding from a single hit stays contained. Above the main deck, the Superstructure houses the bridge and operations spaces, and a faceted Sensor Mast holds the radar arrays while keeping the radar cross section low. Twin Rudder and Steering Gear units steer the ship at speed.

Propulsion

The Propulsion Plant plant uses a combined gas-turbine and electric arrangement. Four Gas Turbine prime movers, each rated near 25,000 to 35,000 shp, drive the shafts at high speed through two Main Reduction Gear gearboxes. Inside each turbine, the GT Compressor raises intake air to high pressure, the GT Combustor burns marine distillate fuel, and the GT Turbine Section extracts shaft power. For quiet, fuel-efficient cruising, two Electric Propulsion Motor electric motors turn the shafts at low speed using power from the ship bus, controlled by a Motor Drive. Each Shaft Line runs through line bearings and a Thrust Block to a five-blade Controllable-Pitch Propeller. The bearings and gears rely on shared Ball Bearing and Helical Gear Pair parts, sealed by Oil Seal elements.

Electrical plant

The Electrical Plant plant supplies several megawatts to the combat and ship systems. Three Gas-Turbine Generator sets feed two Main Switchboard units, and several Power Converter cabinets produce the regulated voltages the radar, weapons, and consoles need. An 12 V Battery bank backs up critical loads, and heavy Wire Bundle runs distribute power throughout the hull. The high power demand of the phased-array radar is a main reason a destroyer carries this much generation.

Weapons

Firepower comes from two Vertical Launch System Group groups holding 96 cells in total. Each VLS Cell holds a sealed Missile Canister that can be a long-range surface-to-air missile, a land-attack cruise missile, or an anti-submarine rocket. When a cell fires, the Cell Igniter lights the motor and the Cell Gas Manager vents the exhaust through the VLS Uptake. The Main Gun Mount carries a 127 mm gun fed by an automatic Automatic Loader from a protected Gun Magazine, used against surface, air, and shore targets. For terminal defense, two Close-In Weapon System mounts each pair a rapid-fire CIWS Cannon with a dedicated CIWS Radar to destroy missiles that leak through the outer layers.

Sensors and combat system

The Radar and Sensor Suite suite is built around four fixed AESA Array Face faces giving continuous 360-degree coverage. Each face packs thousands of Transmit-Receive Module elements that steer the beam electronically, with no rotating antenna. The returns are processed by the Radar Processor, which tracks hundreds of contacts at once, and several Fire-Control Illuminator units guide missiles in their terminal phase. Below the waterline, the Sonar Suite suite combines a Bow Sonar Dome dome with a Towed Array for submarine detection. All of this feeds the Combat Management System, an Aegis-type suite whose CMS Server fuses tracks and whose Operator Console stations let the crew evaluate threats and order engagements. The Electronic Warfare Suite rounds out the defense with an ESM Receiver for threat warning and Decoy Launcher mounts for chaff and decoys.

Aviation, survivability, and use

A Aviation Facility facility with a Helicopter Hangar and Flight Deck supports one anti-submarine helicopter, extending the ship's sensor and weapon reach well beyond the horizon. Survivability rests on the Damage Control Systems systems: a ring Firemain System driven by several Fire Pump units, dewatering pumps, and a CBRN Protection citadel. In service, a destroyer screens carriers and amphibious groups, provides area air defense for a force, hunts submarines, strikes land targets with cruise missiles, and operates alone on presence and patrol tasks where its speed, sensors, and magazine depth all matter. Because one hull carries area air defense, surface strike, anti-submarine warfare, and an embarked aircraft, navies treat the destroyer as the workhorse of the surface fleet and build their escort groups around it.
