Maritime Patrol Aircraft

Product

Overview

A maritime patrol aircraft watches the ocean: it tracks ships, hunts submarines, runs search and rescue, and enforces exclusive economic zones far from any coast. It needs to stay airborne for ten hours or more, fly low and slow over the water to use its sensors, and carry weapons to attack a submarine once it finds one. Most are built on a proven airliner Airframe for range and reliability, then fitted with a Mission System of radar, acoustic, magnetic, and optical sensors and a Weapons & Sonobuoy Bay for torpedoes and sonobuoys. Two efficient Turbofan Engine turbofans give it both the cruise speed to reach a distant patrol area and the endurance to stay there.

Propulsion and airframe

Endurance is the first requirement, so the aircraft uses high-bypass Turbofan Engine turbofans that sip fuel in cruise. Air passes through a large Fan Module, the core High-Pressure Compressor, the Annular Combustor, and the turbines, with most thrust coming from the bypass fan rather than the hot exhaust. The Airframe is a reinforced airliner structure, because anti-submarine work demands repeated descents to a few hundred feet over the water where turbulence and corrosion punish the airframe far more than airline service does. The Wing adds Wing Hardpoint hardpoints for missiles that a passenger jet never carries.

Sensors

The aircraft's value is in the Mission System. The Maritime Search Radar is an AESA radar tuned to pick a submarine periscope or a small boat out of sea clutter at long range. The primary submarine hunting tool is acoustic: the Sonobuoy Launch System drops sonobuoys that listen underwater and radio their hydrophone signals back to the Acoustic Processor, which correlates the buoys to localise a contact. A Magnetic Anomaly Detector magnetic anomaly detector in the tail MAD Tail Boom senses the faint magnetic disturbance of a steel hull during a low overflight. A gyro-stabilised EO/IR Turret gives the crew a daylight and infrared picture, and an Electronic Support Measures system listens for and classifies enemy radars and radios.

Tactical crew and computing

Behind the cockpit sits the tactical compartment. Five to seven operators work at Tactical Operator Console consoles, each fed by the Mission Computer that fuses radar, acoustic, magnetic, and electronic data into a single track picture. One operator runs the acoustics, another the radar and electronic search, another coordinates weapons, and a tactical coordinator directs the search pattern. A Tactical Datalink shares contacts with ships, helicopters, and other aircraft so a whole task group hunts together. This crew, not the airframe, is what turns scattered sensor returns into a localised, attackable submarine.

Weapons and stores

The Weapons & Sonobuoy Bay is an internal bay so weapons add no drag during the long cruise. It carries lightweight homing torpedoes on Torpedo Rack racks, depth charges, and naval mines, all managed by a Stores Management System stores management system. Anti-ship missiles hang on the wing hardpoints for surface targets. The Sonobuoy Launch System carries on the order of a hundred sonobuoys in Sonobuoy Launch Tube tubes; expended steadily through a long search, that magazine is often the limiting factor on how long a hunt can continue.

Flight deck and systems

The Flight Deck is a conventional two-pilot glass cockpit with a Flight Management System flight management system and Autopilot Computer that can fly precise low-level search patterns for hours, freeing the crew to work the sensors. The Aircraft Systems group provides hydraulics, a high-capacity Electrical System system sized for the power-hungry radar and processors, an environmental pack, and an Auxiliary Power Unit auxiliary power unit. The electrical load is far higher than an equivalent airliner because the mission sensors draw heavily, which is why the generators and distribution are uprated.

Roles and endurance

A single sortie can run ten hours and cover a large patrol box. The aircraft transits at high altitude and jet speed to save fuel, then descends to a slow, low patrol when it reaches the search area, climbing again to relay data or to extend its radar horizon. Beyond submarine hunting, the same platform runs surface surveillance against smugglers and pirates, enforces fishing and territorial limits, supports search and rescue by dropping life rafts, and serves as a long-range overland intelligence and reconnaissance platform. Because the airframe, engines, and many systems come from a civil airliner, spares and training are cheaper than a bespoke military design, and upgrades concentrate on the Mission System sensors and software, which advance far faster than the airframe ages.
