Patrol Boat

Product

Overview

A patrol boat is a fast, armed vessel used by navies, coast guards, and harbor authorities to police coastal waters, ports, and exclusive economic zones. It is built for speed, endurance over a day or two at sea, and the ability to stop, inspect, and if needed engage other vessels. A typical boat in this class runs 18 to 30 meters long, displaces 40 to 90 tonnes, and reaches 35 to 45 knots. The mission set covers interdiction of smugglers, search and rescue, fisheries enforcement, and harbor security around high-value berths.

The vessel is organized into a small number of major systems. The Hull and Superstructure carries the loads and shapes the boat for high-speed planing. The Propulsion System system drives it, fed by the Fuel System and powered electrically by the Electrical System system. The crew works from the Bridge and Controls, using the Sensor Suite suite to find and track contacts and the Communications gear to coordinate with shore. When force is required the Remote Weapon Station provides it, while the Protection and Damage Control system keeps the crew safe and the boat afloat. The Boarding Equipment equipment lets the crew put a team onto another vessel.

Hull and structure

The hull is a deep-V planing monohull welded from marine-grade aluminum, usually 5083 or 5086 alloy in plates 6 to 12 mm thick. The Hull Plating is welded to a grid of Frames and Stringers and longitudinal stringers, with a Keel and Chines and hard chines that set the deadrise angle. The deep-V forward sections cut through chop, while the chines generate lift aft so the boat climbs onto plane instead of plowing. Above the deck, the Superstructure is a glass-reinforced composite deckhouse, chosen over aluminum to keep weight high in the boat to a minimum and improve stability. Aluminum and composite together give a strong, light structure that resists corrosion in seawater. Sheet Metal Panel aluminum stock forms the plating and internal bulkheads, joined with marine Fastener Set hardware where welding is not practical.

Propulsion

Speed comes from two high-speed marine diesels, each in the Main Diesel Engine role producing 600 to 1200 kW. Each engine drives a Marine Gearbox that reduces shaft speed and provides reverse, built around a Helical Gear Pair inside a Gearbox Housing sealed with Oil Seal and supported on Ball Bearing sets. From the gearbox, thrust is produced one of two ways. Waterjet variants use a Waterjet Unit that draws seawater through a flush Jet Intake Duct, pressurizes it with a Jet Impeller, and discharges it through a steerable Steering Nozzle. The nozzle vectors thrust for steering and uses a reversing bucket for astern movement, so waterjet boats need no rudder. Propeller variants instead turn a Propeller on a Shaft Line and steer with a Rudder Assembly. Waterjets give shallow draft and crisp low-speed handling for harbor work, while propellers are simpler and more efficient at moderate cruise. Engines sit on Engine Mounts that isolate vibration, are cooled by the Cooling System circuit, and discharge through a wet Wet Exhaust.

Fuel, electrical, and bridge

The Fuel System stores diesel in integral Fuel Tank structures, moves it with a Fuel Transfer Pump, and cleans it through a Fuel Filter before it reaches the engines. Range of 400 to 700 nautical miles depends mostly on tank size and cruise speed. Electrical power comes from a Auxiliary Generator and a 12 V Battery bank feeding the Main Switchboard; an Inverter/Charger supplies AC underway and a Power Supply conditions DC for the electronics. The crew runs the boat from the Helm Console, using an Engine Control Head head for throttle and gear and an Autopilot Computer to hold course. Shock-mitigating Seat Assembly units protect the crew from slamming loads at speed, a real concern when a planing hull pounds through waves.

Sensors, weapons, and operations

Detection is the core of the patrol mission. The Surface-Search Radar sweeps the surface out to roughly 24 nautical miles to find other vessels, and a GNSS and Compass receiver fixes position and heading. For identification, the Electro-Optical Turret carries a daylight camera and a Thermal Camera on a stabilized gimbal driven by Servo Motor units, plus a Laser Rangefinder that measures range to a contact. An AIS Transponder transponder shows cooperative traffic. When a vessel must be stopped, the crew can use the Remote Weapon Station, a remote mount aimed from inside the wheelhouse so the operator stays behind the Armor Panel protection. The Fire-Control Unit unit combines the turret track and rangefinder to compute the aim point. To board a suspect vessel, the crew launches the RHIB Tender down the stern ramp, runs alongside, and uses the Boarding Ladder to climb aboard. Damage control gear, including Bilge Pump units and Fire Suppression, keeps the boat operating after damage. Variants range from lightly armed harbor security boats with a single machine gun to offshore versions with an autocannon, a larger sensor suite, and longer range for patrolling an exclusive economic zone.
