Floating Solar Platform

Product

Overview

Floating solar (floatovoltaics) is a deployment of photovoltaic modules on water bodies, lakes, reservoirs, treatment ponds, or coastal lagoons, eliminating land-use competition. The system comprises buoyant pontoons supporting a modular array frame, electrical distribution, and mooring hardware to resist wind, waves, and anchor drag.

Compared to land-based utility solar, floating installations offer higher cooling (water surface temperature reduces module losses by 5–10%), reduced algae bloom through shading, and dual-use aquaculture integration. Challenges include saltwater corrosion, dynamic loading, and water-access logistics for maintenance.

A typical floating platform spans 2–5 hectares for a 5 MW array. Modules are arranged in blocks of 20–30 units, each block floating independently but electrically networked. Central inverters are housed in waterproof enclosures on the platform edge, with AC feed running via submerged cable to shore infrastructure.

How it works

The Float Modules provide buoyancy through sealed HDPE pontoons or closed-cell foam, sized to carry the Mounting Structure weight plus equipment and maintenance staff loads. Typical buoyancy reserve is 20–30% above working load to survive partial flooding.

The PV Array modules are wired in series strings (16–20 modules per string) and connected via Junction Box combiners to the main DC Panel. DC voltage typically reaches 1000 V to reduce current losses in submerged cables.

Cable Management routes cables via submerged trays or floating conduits to minimize drag and UV damage. A single armored cable or dual-core bundle runs to shore, where a Grid-Tie Inverter converts DC to three-phase AC synchronized with the grid.

The Anchoring System uses either gravity deadweight Concrete Anchor blocks (5–20 ton each) or drag-embedment anchors. Mooring chains are typically Grade 80 galvanized steel, with elastomer Shock Absorber yokes to dampen surge forces during storms. A properly designed system holds position in 50 m/s winds and 2 m waves without line breakage.

Electrical Distribution includes main breakers, Surge Protector equipment, and a kWh Meter to track export to grid. All enclosures are IP66 rated for saltspray and washdown.

The Safety Barriers perimeter, roped Warning Buoy and LED Light navigation marks, alert boats and swimmers. Day-marks and night-lights comply with local maritime navigation codes.

Installation & Maintenance

Installation sequences site preparation (bathymetry survey, geotechnical anchor testing), barge delivery of pontoons and modules, and offshore assembly. A floating array can be installed in 6–12 weeks for a 5 MW project.

Maintenance includes quarterly cleaning of panels (bio-fouling and dust reduce output ~3–5%), annual hose-down of electrical enclosures, and bi-annual anchor inspection. Module replacements begin in year 20–25; pontoons and frames typically last 30+ years with minor repairs.

Thermal & Efficiency

Evaporative cooling from the water surface maintains module temperatures 10–15°C below land-based arrays, improving efficiency by 5–10%. Bifacial modules capture water reflection (albedo ~30%), adding 5–15% additional power on clear days.

Environmental Impact

Shading reduces phytoplankton, benefiting some reservoirs (lower eutrophication) but suppressing primary production in others. Co-deployment with aquaculture (fish cages beneath panels) improves land efficiency. Long-term ecological monitoring is recommended for sensitive water bodies.
