Bucket-Wheel Excavator

Product

Overview

A bucket-wheel excavator (BWE) is a continuous digger used in large open-cast mines, chiefly lignite, coal and overburden. Where a shovel or dragline works in discrete bites, a BWE cuts steadily: a slowly rotating wheel of buckets shaves the face while the whole machine slews and crawls, delivering an unbroken stream of material onto its conveyors. That continuity is what gives the largest machines their staggering daily output and makes the BWE the front end of a continuous mining chain feeding belt conveyors and spreaders.

The cutting element is the Bucket Wheel, a ring up to ~20 m across carrying a dozen or more buckets around its rim. As the wheel turns, each Digging Bucket cuts into the bank, lifts material over the top, and releases it through the wheel centre onto a chute. Bucket teeth do the actual cutting and wear fastest, so they are designed for quick replacement.

How it works

Material is won by combining three motions. The Bucket Wheel rotates against the face under its drive motors and ring gear; the Superstructure slews the Bucket-Wheel Boom sideways so the wheel sweeps an arc across the bank; and the Crawler Track Unit units crawl the machine forward to take the next slice. The wheel boom is luffed up and down on hoist ropes over the mast to set cutting height, while a Counterweight Boom carrying ballast balances its weight and dig force about the slew axis.

Cut material is carried away continuously. It drops down the wheel discharge chute onto the in-boom transfer conveyor, crosses the slewing centre, and is thrown clear by the long Discharge Conveyor onto a bench conveyor or directly to a spreader. Every conveyor shares the same belt, pulleys and idlers, sized to the wheel's output so the dig rate never outruns the belt.

Power and control tie it together. The Electrical System system takes a medium-voltage trailing cable into variable-frequency drives that set wheel, slew, travel and conveyor speeds, with a PLC matching dig rate to conveyor loading. The operator works from the Operator Cab at the wheel end, controlling slew, luff and crawl with a clear view of the cut.
