Mining Shovel Dipper

Product

Overview

The dipper is the bucket of an electric rope shovel, the part that bites into a blasted bank, fills with broken rock, swings over a haul truck, and drops the load through a hinged floor. It is the most heavily loaded and fastest-wearing major component on the machine, and a single large mining dipper can hold sixty cubic metres and weigh more than a hundred tonnes when full. Because it works against abrasive, freshly blasted rock thousands of times a shift, almost every surface that touches material is a bolt-on or pinned wear part that the maintenance crew replaces on a schedule rather than welding in place.

A dipper combines a fabricated Dipper Body for stiffness, a cast Dipper Lip and Tooth System for digging, a Dump Door with its Door Latch for dumping, and the Dipper Bail that the hoist ropes pull on. The Handle Saddle Block carries the dipper handle that crowds it into the bank, and a Wear Package protects everything structural.

How the dig cycle works

In each cycle the operator hoists the dipper up the face on twin wire ropes while the crowd machinery pushes the dipper handle forward through the Handle Saddle Block, driving the teeth into the muck pile. Hoist force lifts the dipper, crowd force sets how deep the teeth cut, and the two together fill the body in a few seconds. The full dipper then swings to the truck, the operator trips the Door Latch, and the load drops through the open Dump Door. As the empty dipper lowers, gravity and the door arm re-latch the door for the next pass. A large shovel repeats this around four times to load one truck, so the dipper sees tens of thousands of impacts per day.

The lip and teeth

The leading edge takes the worst of the abuse. The Dipper Lip is a single Lip Casting of manganese steel, a metal that work-hardens under impact so its surface gets tougher the more it is pounded. Bolted across the lip are six Tooth Point points carried on Tooth Adapter adapters. The points concentrate the dig force onto small areas so the dipper penetrates the bank instead of skidding off it, and they are designed to be swapped without welding: a Retaining Pin and a Lock Clip hold each point, so a crew can knock out a worn point and drive in a new one in minutes. Between the teeth, a Lip Shroud protects the lip casting. Points are the fastest-wearing part of the whole shovel and may last only one or two shifts in hard ground.

Body, bail, and crowd

The Dipper Body is a welded box of Side Plate and Rear Wall Plate wear plate tied to a Front Frame Casting casting, with Trunnion Boss bosses that the bail pins through. The Dipper Bail is a cast yoke that straddles the dipper; the two hoist ropes attach to it through a Rope Equalizer that keeps their tension matched, and Bail Bushing bushings at every pin joint take the wear so the castings do not. The Handle Saddle Block is the wear block the dipper handle slides through; Saddle Wear Strip strips and a Shipper Shaft running on Ball Bearing bearings let the saddle pivot as the crowd drives the dipper in and out.

Dumping

Mining dippers dump through the bottom rather than by tipping, which keeps the load clear of the operator and lets the dipper unload high over a truck box. The Door Plate hangs on a Door Hinge and is held shut by a Latch Keeper. To dump, a small Trip Motor pulls the Trip Cable, releasing the keeper so the weight of the load swings the door open. A Door Snubber cushions the door on each cycle, and Coil Spring springs in the latch help it re-seat. The Door Arm links the door to the latch so it relatches as the dipper is lowered for the next dig.

Wear protection and change-out

Almost everything material touches is a sacrificial part. The Wear Package bolts Wall Liner liners and Floor Runner runners inside the body, and Corner Shroud shrouds protect the front corners where wear is worst. Plow bolts hold these so they sit flush and shear off cleanly for removal. This lets a mine run the structural Dipper Body for years while replacing the wear faces every few weeks. When the dipper itself is worn out or a different rock type calls for a different tooth pattern, the whole dipper is unpinned at the bail and lifted off as a unit, using the Pad Eye rigging lugs, then a fresh dipper is pinned on.

Sizing and selection

Dipper size is matched to the shovel and to the haul trucks it loads. A capacity that fills a truck in three to five passes balances the shovel against the truck fleet, since too small a dipper wastes swing cycles and too large a dipper risks overloading the trucks. Hard, dense ore calls for a smaller, heavier dipper with aggressive teeth and thick liners, while soft overburden suits a larger, lighter dipper that scoops big volumes. Capacity is rated by both volume and rated payload, because a dipper sized for light coal would overstress the shovel if filled with dense iron ore. The dipper is therefore one of the few parts of a shovel that a mine changes to suit the material it is digging that season.
