Bulk Explosive Charging Truck
ProductOverview
A bulk explosive charging truck is a mobile factory. It carries the separate, non-explosive ingredients of an emulsion explosive and combines them only at the moment of charging, so the material on board is not a finished explosive until it leaves the hose and enters the blast hole. This is the central safety idea of modern bulk blasting: instead of transporting and handling packaged dynamite or cartridges, the mine transports an oxidizer-rich emulsion matrix that is inert to detonation, and the truck sensitizes it on site. The result is a pumpable explosive placed precisely where it is needed, with a recorded mass for every hole.
The truck is two machines in one. Underneath is a heavy Truck Chassis and Cab that drives the unit between the magazine, the bench, and the blast pattern. On the deck is a chemical plant: the Emulsion Matrix Tank, the Oxidizer Tank, the Gassing System dosing, the Product Pump System, the Blending Manifold, and the Delivery System reel. A Charge Control System system ties them together and meters the product.
Chassis and drive
The Truck Chassis and Cab is a heavy truck rated for the laden mass of full product tanks. A diesel Diesel Engine drives the vehicle and, through a Power Take-Off on the transmission, powers the plant hydraulics. Surface units are commonly built on highway-legal or off-highway truck frames with three axles; underground charging units are smaller and built on low-profile carriers. The Operator Cab gives the operator a sealed station and an in-cab display so charging can be supervised without leaving the cab, which matters when working close to a freshly drilled, dusty bench.
Emulsion and oxidizer storage
The heart of the load is the Emulsion Matrix Tank, an insulated stainless vessel holding the emulsion matrix. The matrix is a water-in-oil emulsion of an ammonium nitrate solution dispersed as microscopic droplets in a fuel phase. It is stable and pumpable but cannot detonate while it stays a fine, gas-free emulsion. The Tank Heater and Tank Insulation keep it warm enough that it does not crystallize, and a slow Tank Agitator keeps the phases from separating. The Oxidizer Tank holds additional ammonium nitrate, as prill or solution, that can be metered in to raise the energy of the blend for harder rock.
Sensitization
Emulsion matrix is made into an explosive by introducing tiny gas bubbles that act as hot spots for detonation. The Gassing System system does this by chemical gassing: a Gassing Pump doses a measured stream of gassing solution, typically sodium nitrite, through a Gassing Injector into the product as it is pumped. The nitrite reacts within the emulsion to release nitrogen gas, lowering the density in a controlled way. Density is the key variable: a heavily gassed, low-density product is more sensitive and used to prime the column, while a denser product carries more energy per meter. Because gassing happens in line at the point of delivery, the material spends almost no time as a finished explosive before it is in the ground.
Pumping, blending, and delivery
The Product Pump System uses gentle positive displacement pumps. The Emulsion Pump is a progressive cavity or gear type that moves the viscous matrix without shearing the emulsion droplets, which would desensitize or destabilize it. Streams of emulsion, oxidizer, and gassing agent meet at the Blending Manifold, a static Static Mixer with no moving parts, where Blend Valve settings fix the ratio. The blended, sensitized product then runs out through the Delivery System system: a powered Hose Reel deploys a static-dissipative Charge Hose down the hole, and the Charging Head places product from the toe upward so the column rises around the hose as it is withdrawn.
Control and metering
Every charge is measured. The Charge Control System system uses a Load Cell under the tanks and Flow Meter units on the product lines to track the mass and ratio delivered to each hole. The Charge Controller lets the operator dial in a target mass and density, gasses and blends to match, and logs a record per hole for the blast report. This metering is what lets engineers design a blast on paper and trust that the energy actually placed in the rock matches the design.
Hydraulics, safety, and variants
The Auxiliary Hydraulic System system, driven from the PTO, runs the pumps, the reel, and the agitators. Safety design runs through the whole machine: conductive hoses and bonded metalwork drain static charge, the product is non-explosive until gassed, and the gassing system is interlocked so product cannot be delivered without the correct sensitization. Variants split along application. Surface bench trucks carry the largest tanks and longest reels and may also dispense ANFO, a dry ammonium nitrate and fuel oil blend, through a separate auger. Underground charging units are compact, run on flameproof carriers, and charge upholes and development rounds where access is tight. In all cases the principle is the same: carry the ingredients, make the explosive at the hole, and record exactly what was placed.
