Tailings Filter Press

Product

Overview

A tailings filter press squeezes the water out of mine tailings, turning a pumpable slurry into a stackable solid cake. It is the central machine in dry stack tailings management, an approach that lets mines store waste as a compacted pile instead of behind a wet tailings dam. By driving the residual moisture down to roughly 12 to 20 percent, the press produces a cake that can be conveyed, trucked and stacked, recovers most of the process water for reuse, and removes the dam failure risk that has driven the mining industry toward filtered tailings.

The press works in batches. A pack of filter plates is clamped shut to form a row of sealed chambers, each lined with filter cloth. Slurry is pumped in under pressure, water passes through the cloth as filtrate while solids build up as cake inside each chamber, and once the chambers are full the cake is squeezed, blown and then dropped out when the plates open. On large tailings duty the cycle is fully automatic and the machine is enormous, with plate packs weighing many tonnes and clamping forces in the thousands of kilonewtons.

Frame and closure

Everything reacts into the Main Frame, a heavy welded structure with a fixed Head Stock at one end, a moving Tail Stock at the other, and two massive Side Bar beams spanning between them that both carry the hanging plates and resist the clamping load. The plates are pressed together by the Closure System, whose Closure Cylinder is fed by a Hydraulic Pump power unit. The clamp must hold the pack sealed against the full feed pressure, so the cylinder is large bore and the clamp pressure is monitored throughout the cycle.

Plate pack and chambers

The working part of the press is the Filter Plate Pack. Each Filter Plate is a recessed polypropylene plate, and where extra dewatering is needed a Membrane Plate carries an inflatable membrane that mechanically squeezes the cake. Every plate is dressed with a Filter Cloth held in place by a Cloth Caulking Cord cord. When the pack is clamped, the recesses of adjacent plates form chambers, and feed enters every chamber through a central Plate Feed Eye that runs the length of the pack. The cloth retains the solids and passes the filtrate, which drains away through ports in each plate.

The filtration cycle

A cycle runs in sequenced steps. The Feed System uses a high-pressure Feed Pump to fill the chambers, then keeps pumping as cake builds and back-pressure rises, packing each chamber solid. On membrane plates the Air Blow System then inflates the membranes to squeeze the cake, expelling more water in less time than feed pressure alone could. The same air system blows out the slurry left in the central feed core and pushes a final round of drying air through the cake. These steps are what take the cake from a wet filtered mass down to the low moisture that makes it stackable.

Discharge and cloth wash

Once the cake is dry, the press opens and discharges. The Plate Shifter is a carriage driven by a Shifter Motor along the side bars; its Plate Gripper pulls plates apart one at a time so the cake slabs drop free. Below the plates, the Drip Tray & Bomb Bay panels swing open like bomb-bay doors to let cake fall to a conveyor, then close again to catch drips on the next fill. Between cycles, blinded cloths cut filtration rate, so the Cloth Wash System runs a travelling Spray Header of high-pressure nozzles across each plate face to clear the weave.

Control

The whole machine is run by the Control Panel, a PLC sequencer that steps the press through fill, squeeze, core-blow, dry and discharge, holding clamp pressure and checking interlocks before each move. Because tailings presses run thousands of cycles a year unattended, the control logic also tracks cycle time and filtrate flow to flag blinded cloths and worn membranes before they cost throughput, keeping the dry stack circuit fed at a steady rate.

Materials, consumables and scale

A tailings press is defined as much by its consumables as by its structure. The Filter Cloth is the single most important wear item: its weave sets the balance between fast filtration and clean filtrate, it blinds over time as fines lodge in the cloth, and it is replaced on a schedule measured in cycles. Plates are reinforced polypropylene, with Membrane Plate units carrying a thermoplastic or rubber squeeze membrane that is itself a wear part. Feed slurry is abrasive, so the Feed Pump and feed manifold are lined or hardened, and the central feed eyes erode fastest because the whole flow passes through them. Presses are sized by plate dimension and chamber count. A plant might run several large presses in parallel, each with well over a hundred chambers, to keep up with a concentrator producing thousands of tonnes of tailings a day. The trade-off in sizing is between batch size and cycle time: a bigger press moves more per cycle but takes longer to fill, squeeze and discharge, so the chamber count, the squeeze pressure and the cloth choice are tuned together against the specific tailings to hit both the moisture target that makes the cake stackable and the throughput the mine needs.
