Mine Shaft Cage
ProductOverview
A mine shaft cage is the conveyance that carries miners and equipment up and down a vertical shaft, the underground equivalent of a building lift but operating at far higher speeds, over far greater drops, and under a regulatory regime built around the consequences of a rope failure. The cage hangs from a single winding rope (or a balanced pair) wound on the drum or friction wheel of the surface winder. It travels inside guides fixed to the shaft walls, stopping at the surface bank and at one or more underground stations called insets.
Where a Mine Hoisting Skip is dedicated to lifting broken ore and is allowed to tip and dump its load automatically, the cage is the people-and-materials machine. It must hold occupants level, stop accurately at each landing, and protect those occupants if anything in the hoisting train fails. A typical winning shaft runs a cage in one compartment and one or two skips in the others, the cage handling the shift change and the skips handling tonnage.
Frame and Decks
The Cage Frame & Decks is the structural heart of the conveyance. Four Corner Post members in 100-150 mm rectangular hollow section carry the suspension load from the top bridle down to each Deck Floor. The decks are 6-8 mm chequer plate with drainage holes, each rated for 12-15 standing miners or one loaded mine car. Horizontal Cross Girt ties brace the posts against the racking loads imposed by the guides, and a sloped Roof Bonnet sheds any rock or water that drops down the shaft. The sides are clad in Side Cladding Mesh expanded metal that encloses occupants while still allowing ventilation airflow and visibility of the shaft. Each deck opening is closed by a Entrance Gate gate, a vertical-bar leaf running on Gate Track guides and held shut by a Gate Latch. A Gate Interlock Switch switch prevents the winder from moving until every gate is closed, the same logic that keeps a lift from running with its doors open.
Suspension Gear
The winding rope ends in the Suspension Gear gear. The rope is terminated in a Rope Cappel, a cast socket where the rope is splayed and set in white metal or resin so the termination develops the full breaking load of the rope. Below the cappel sits the Detaching Hook, an Ormerod or King pattern hook that performs a single critical job: if the winder fails to stop and the cage is wound up past its correct position, the hook strikes a plate in the headgear, splits, releases the rope, and at the same instant catches the cage so it cannot fall back down the shaft. From the hook, forged Suspension Link chains form a bridle to the four cage corners, and a Rope Swivel lets the cage rotate freely so the natural lay torque of the rope does not slowly spin the occupants.
Safety Catch Gear
The defining feature of a man-riding cage is its Safety Catch Gear. Under normal operation, rope tension holds the Trip Linkage linkage in its armed position, keeping the gripping dogs clear of the guides. If the rope breaks, tension vanishes, and the heavy Catch Spring springs immediately drive four Safety Dog eccentric cams into the guide faces. The dogs are arranged so that the harder the cage tries to keep falling, the deeper they bite, wedging the conveyance to a stop. A Dog Cross Shaft cross shaft ties opposing dogs so both guide faces are gripped together, and a Overspeed Governor provides a second trigger: a guide-driven centrifugal governor that sets the dogs on overspeed even when the rope is intact, covering a runaway caused by winder or brake failure rather than rope breakage.
Guide Shoes
The cage rides the shaft on four Guide Shoe assemblies. At low speed a Shoe Wear Liner of lignum or UHMWPE slides directly on the guide, while at full hoisting speed rubber-tyred Guide Roller units carry the lateral loads for a smoother ride and less wear. A Shoe Spring Pack spring pack lets each shoe follow the inevitable misalignment at guide joints without snatching, an important detail when a cage is moving at 10 m/s and any sudden lateral jolt is felt directly by the people on board.
Signalling and Decking
Communication up the shaft runs through the Signalling & Communication system. The onsetter sends standard coded signals through a Bell Signal Box to the winder driver, a Shaft Telephone intrinsically safe telephone gives voice contact, and a Slack-Rope Switch stops the winder if the rope ever goes slack, preventing rope pile-up and the shock loading that follows when it comes tight again. At each landing the Deck & Landing Equipment holds the cage steady for loading: swing-out Decking Chairs (Keps) decking chairs, driven by a Keps Cylinder, catch and support the cage so it can be loaded without rope movement, and a Retractable Bridge spans the gap between the cage deck and the station floor before retracting clear for the next lift.
Variants and Use
Cages range from a single-deck conveyance in a small shaft to three-deck cages serving deep gold and platinum mines, where one wind moves a full shift of workers. Shaft guides may be timber, steel rail, or tensioned rope guides; rope guides give a quieter ride but call for a different shoe design. The cage shares its shaft, headgear, and winder with the ore skips, so its operating envelope, speed limits, and signalling codes are set by the same winding installation that governs production hoisting.
