Drip Coffee Maker

Overview

A drip coffee maker brews by trickling near-boiling water through ground coffee held in a paper filter, collecting the result in a glass carafe kept hot on an electric plate. The appliance is built around the moulded Housing, which carries the cold-water reservoir, the carafe well and the feet, and routes water through the heating and dispensing path.

How it works

Cold water poured into the reservoir flows by gravity through an outlet valve into the Heating System. There the Aluminium Heater Block, an aluminium casting clamped to a tubular heating element, sits below the water line. As the element boils the water in its channel, steam bubbles act as a thermosiphon pump, lifting hot water up a riser tube. A one-way check valve stops it draining back, and thermal cutoffs protect the block against dry-fire.

The hot water emerges at the Shower Head, which spreads it evenly over the bed of grounds in the Brew Basket. The basket holds the paper filter and includes a drip-stop valve so the carafe can be removed mid-brew without spilling. Brewed coffee drips into the Glass Carafe below.

Once brewing finishes, the Warming Plate beneath the carafe keeps the coffee hot, regulated by its own thermostat. All of this is sequenced by the Control Board, whose microcontroller drives a digital clock, a programmable start timer and the keep-warm timeout, switching the heater and plate through relays. Mains power enters through the Power Cord, and an internal wiring loom links the board to the heater, sensors and warming plate.
