Overview

A hot-air popcorn maker pops kernels with a stream of heated air instead of oil. Room air is pulled in through a grille under the Housing Base, driven up past a glowing heating coil, and forced into a Popping Chamber full of kernels. The kernels tumble in the rising air until each one bursts, and the lighter popped corn is carried up and out the Chute into a bowl. Because nothing is fried, the result has no added fat and the machine wipes clean.

The body is a single molded base that seats the blower, the heating assembly, and a small control board. A clear Lid sits on top to steer the popped corn toward the spout, and its underside doubles as a measuring cup that holds exactly one batch of kernels. A shallow Butter Melting Tray rests over the warm airflow so a pat of butter melts and drips down while the corn pops. Rubber feet keep the unit from sliding under the vibration of the fan.

How it works

The Blower Assembly is the heart of the machine. Its Fan Motor spins a centrifugal Fan Impeller that draws air through the intake grille and pushes it upward through the body. On the way up, the air passes the open-coil nichrome element in the Heating Assembly, which heats it to around 200 °C before it reaches the kernels.

Inside the popping cup, a ring of angled vents admits the hot air so it both heats the kernels and keeps them in constant motion, fluidizing the bed so none scorch against the wall. Each kernel holds a trace of water that flashes to steam near 180 °C; the pressure ruptures the hull and the starch expands into the familiar puff. As soon as a kernel pops it loses density, so the airflow lifts it over the lip and out the chute while the unpopped kernels stay below.

Heat is held in a safe band by the components in the heating assembly. A bimetal thermostat cycles the element on and off to cap the air temperature, and a one-shot thermal fuse sits in series as a backstop: if the airflow ever stops and the coil runs away, the fuse opens permanently and kills power. The Control Module module carries the rocker switch and the line connections, and the Power Cord feeds mains power in and distributes it to the switch, element, and motor through the internal harness.
