Espresso Machine

Product

Also known as: espresso maker, coffee machine, barista machine

Overview

The espresso machine is an automatic bean-to-cup appliance that grinds whole coffee beans, doses them into a brewing chamber, and forces hot water through the compacted bed of grounds under pressure to extract a small, concentrated coffee. Unlike a manual machine with a hand-held portafilter, this design moves every step inside the housing: a Conical Burr Grinder mills the beans on demand, a motorised Brew Group tamps the puck and runs the shot, and a Milk Frother steams milk for drinks such as cappuccino and latte. A touch-display Control Board sequences these subsystems and meters each dose.

The machine is built around a sheet-steel Internal Frame inside a moulded Chassis & Housing, with a removable Drip Tray to catch run-off and a Grounds Drawer that collects spent pucks ejected after each brew.

Water path

Cold water is held in a removable Water Tank, a translucent reservoir whose level is read by a Float Level Sensor so the machine can warn the user and lock out brewing before it runs dry. Water passes through a Water Filter Cartridge cartridge that reduces hardness and chlorine, limiting scale build-up in the heater and off-flavours in the cup.

From the tank, water is drawn into the Pump Unit. A Flow Meter on the inlet counts the volume delivered, which is how the controller measures each shot rather than timing it. A pair of Check Valve components keeps flow one-directional, and flexible Silicone Water Hose runs connect the tank, pump, heater, and group. Pressure is read by a Pressure Gauge and managed by the Pressure System.

Boiler and heating

Brew water is heated by a Thermoblock Boiler, a flow-through boiler rather than a tank boiler. Cold water passes through a narrow channel cast into the aluminium Thermoblock Body, which is warmed by an embedded Heating Element. Because only the water in transit is heated, the thermoblock reaches brew temperature in seconds and holds very little hot water at rest, which suits an appliance that brews single drinks on demand.

Temperature is held by feedback from an NTC Temperature Sensor whose resistance falls as it warms, letting the controller switch the element to keep the block in the 90–96 °C brew window. Two independent safety devices guard against runaway heating: a resettable Overheat Cutoff Thermostat thermostat that opens if the block overshoots, and a one-shot Thermal Fuse that permanently breaks the heater circuit if the thermostat fails.

Pump and pressure

Pressure comes from a Vibratory Pump, an electromagnetic pump well suited to a domestic machine. An AC-driven Solenoid Coil pulls a Pump Piston back against a Pump Spring on each half-cycle; the spring drives it forward on the other half, so the piston oscillates at line frequency and delivers water in rapid pulses through the brass Pump Head. The pump can generate roughly 15 bar at stall.

Espresso is brewed at about 9 bar, so the surplus is bled off rather than applied to the puck. An OPV Relief Valve (over-pressure valve) opens above its set point and returns excess water to the tank, capping brew pressure regardless of how tight the puck is packed. Steam-side pressure is limited separately by a Pressure Switch that cuts the heater once the target is reached.

Group head and brewing

The heart of the machine is the Brew Group. Ground coffee falls from the grinder into the Brew Chamber, where a Brew Piston compresses it into a puck. A Brew Unit Motor turns a Reduction Gearset, a worm-and-spur reduction with a cam that converts rotation into the piston's clamp-and-release travel.

During the shot, hot water enters above the puck and is spread evenly across its surface by an Infusion Screen, so extraction is uniform rather than channelled through one spot. When the shot ends, a 3-Way Solenoid Valve vents the chamber, dropping pressure behind the puck so it can be compacted and ejected as a dry cake into the grounds drawer instead of dribbling. The group is repositionable between brewing, ejection, and rinse, and the whole unit is designed to be removed for cleaning.

Coffee itself is produced by the Conical Burr Grinder, a Conical Burr Set of a rotating and a fixed conical steel burr. Beans feed from the Bean Hopper through a shut-off gate, a Grinder Motor drives the burrs, and a Grind Adjuster sets coarseness by changing the gap between burrs, which is the main lever for shot strength. Ground coffee drops through the Dosing Chute into the brew chamber.

Steam and frothing

For milk drinks the Milk Frother uses steam produced by the same heater path run hotter, gated by a Steam Valve. Steam exits through the Steam Wand, an articulated tube ending in a frothing tip that injects steam and air into milk to texture it. A Milk Pump, a peristaltic pump, draws milk from a removable Milk Carafe and meters it into the steam stream, so the machine can dispense frothed milk automatically without the user holding a jug to the wand.

Controls and housing

Everything is coordinated by the Control Board. A microcontroller (Microcontroller) reads the flow meter, NTC sensor, and float switch, then drives the loads: two Triac devices phase-control the heater and pump, and Relay components switch the motors and valves. The user interacts through an LCD Panel touch display and two Rotary Encoder rotary knobs for selecting drinks and adjusting volume, strength, and temperature. The board, sensors, and actuators are tied together by an internal Wire Bundle, and the assembled mechanism sits inside the Chassis & Housing with its trays and drawers.
