Portable Induction Cooktop

Product

Overview

A portable induction cooktop is a single-burner appliance that heats cookware directly instead of heating a surface and passing the heat on. It sits on a worktop, plugs into a wall socket, and works with any flat ferromagnetic pan placed over the cooking zone. The whole unit is built around a flat Litz Work Coil sitting just under a Glass-Ceramic Top Plate, with a Resonant Inverter Board driving the coil, a Control and Interface Board running the firmware and touch panel, and a Cooling Fan Assembly keeping the power semiconductors cool. Because the energy goes straight into the pan and not into a hotplate, these cooktops respond quickly, waste little heat into the room, and stay cool enough to touch around the zone within seconds of removing the pan.

How induction heating works

The cooktop does not use a flame or a resistive element. The Litz Work Coil is a flat spiral of Litz Wire Winding, multi-strand wire that keeps resistance low at high frequency by spreading current across many insulated strands. When the inverter pushes a 20-50 kHz alternating current through the coil, it creates a rapidly changing magnetic field. A Ferrite Bar Set of radial bars sits beneath the coil to channel that flux upward through the glass and shield the electronics below. Place a steel or cast-iron pan on the Glass-Ceramic Top Plate and the field induces circulating eddy currents in the base of the pan. The pan metal has real resistance, so those currents dissipate as heat right in the cookware. Magnetic hysteresis losses in the steel add a second, smaller heating effect. The glass itself is non-magnetic and does not couple to the field, so it only warms up by conduction from the hot pan, which is why the surface around the zone stays comparatively cool.

Power electronics

Turning 230 V mains into a clean 20-50 kHz drive is the job of the Resonant Inverter Board. Incoming power first passes an EMI Input Filter with a common-mode choke and X/Y capacitors so the switching noise does not flow back onto the mains. A Bridge Rectifier then converts the AC to a DC bus, smoothed by the DC Bus Capacitor. The heart of the stage is a switching Switching IGBT commanded by a IGBT Gate Driver. It chops the DC bus and feeds the work coil, which together with the Resonant Capacitor forms an LC tank. Running near the tank resonance lets the IGBT switch when current or voltage is near zero, which cuts switching loss and keeps the device cool. A Snubber Network tames the voltage spikes at turn-off, and a Current Sense Transformer transformer reports coil current back to the controller so it can hold the target power and recognise the load. The IGBT and rectifier each sit on a heatsink, the IGBT Heatsink and the Rectifier Heatsink, in the path of the Axial DC Fan.

Control and sensing

The Control and Interface Board is the low-voltage brain. An Microcontroller reads the Capacitive Touch Panel, a printed electrode array behind the glass driven by its own Touch Controller IC, and shows power level, timer and fault codes on the Segment Display. A Power Supply derives the logic rails, and an Optocoupler keeps the logic galvanically isolated from the high-voltage stage. Power level is set by changing how hard and how often the inverter fires, not by a variable resistor, so even the lowest setting is full-power bursts spaced out in time. Several sensors close the loop. The Pan Detection Circuit circuit watches the coil load and only lets the inverter fire when a ferromagnetic pan is actually present, which stops the unit running into empty air and saves energy. An Glass NTC Thermistor thermistor reads the glass temperature for the cooking modes, while an Heatsink NTC Thermistor thermistor throttles or stops the inverter if the power stage overheats. As a last resort a one-shot Thermal Cutoff opens the mains if the glass ever exceeds its safe limit.

Materials and construction

The cooking surface is a low-expansion glass-ceramic that tolerates steep thermal gradients without cracking, sitting on a Mica Thermal Barrier that blocks heat from reaching the coil. The coil winding rests in a Coil Former and is wrapped with high-temperature Coil Insulation Tape. Everything mounts into a Enclosure and Chassis of a plastic upper bezel and lower housing over a Sheet Metal Panel chassis, with Vent Grille openings for intake and exhaust. The Power Cord and Inlet enters through a strain relief and bonds the chassis to earth, and four Non-Slip Foot grip the worktop while lifting the base for under-chassis airflow.

Use

In practice the cook sets a power step or a target temperature on the Capacitive Touch Panel, drops a magnetic pan on the zone, and the Pan Detection Circuit circuit lets the inverter start. Boil times rival a fast kettle because most of the energy lands in the water rather than the room. The 0-180 minute timer and the temperature steps cover everything from a gentle simmer to a hard sear, and the cooktop folds away after use, which makes it a common choice for small kitchens, dorms, and travel.
