Mail Sorting Machine Product
Overview
A mail sorting machine is an automated system for processing high volumes of postal and business documents, reading addresses or barcodes, and routing each piece to the correct output bin. Used in postal facilities, corporate mailrooms, and service bureaux, the machine handles thousands of letters per hour with precision that exceeds manual hand-sorting, while reducing labor cost and error rates.
The machine works by pulling documents one at a time from a feeder hopper, advancing them through a scanning area where barcode readers and OCR software read delivery addresses or sort codes, then routing each piece via motorized diverter gates to one of 4–16 output bins based on the scanned data. A central processor matches the scanned text or barcode against a database of postal codes, routes, or custom sorting rules, then actuates the appropriate gate to deflect the mail stream.
How it works
Documents from the Feed Hopper are advanced one at a time by the Feed Roller and Drive Feed Wheel, driven by friction wheels. The Document Sensor detects when a document reaches the transport area. The Drive Motor pulls the document along the Conveyor Belt at 60–180 feet per minute, with the Alignment Guide Rail keeping it centred and aligned.
As the document moves through the scanner, the Document Camera captures a high-resolution image of the address block or label. Simultaneously, the Barcode Scanner attempts to read any printed barcode (1D or 2D formats). The LED Illumination provides bright white illumination for OCR clarity. The OCR Processor Module passes the image to the central Multi-Core CPU, which runs optical character recognition algorithms to extract the address text or sort code.
The Main Control Board compares the extracted text against a loaded database: postal codes, route assignments, or custom sort rules. Based on the match, the processor energizes one of the Air Solenoid Valve valves, which supplies pneumatic pressure to a Gate Actuator. The actuator pivots a Deflector Blade into the mail stream at the precise moment the document reaches that diverter, deflecting the mail into the correct Output Bin.
The Bin Frame holds 4–16 removable output bins (with Divider Panel separators preventing mix between pockets). Once a bin fills, an operator removes it and manually carries the sorted batch to the next processing step or distribution point.
Power flows through the Power Transformer, which steps down 110–240 V AC to 24 V AC and 12 V DC secondary supplies. The Switching Power Supply modules convert these to regulated 24 V DC and 5 V DC for solenoid and sensor power. The Motor Contactor switches the Drive Motor on and off under processor control, and Circuit Breaker modules protect against overload.
The Welded Frame provides structural support and houses all subassemblies, with Guard Panel enclosures protecting operators from moving conveyor belts and rotating rollers. The Access Door allows jam clearing and routine maintenance without disassembly.
