Microwave Oven

Overview

A microwave oven heats food by exciting water molecules with electromagnetic radiation rather than by external heat. Food sits inside the Cooking Cavity, a sealed steel chamber whose walls reflect the radiation back onto the load, and is sealed by the Door Assembly, which combines a perforated metal screen and a tuned choke so microwaves stay inside while the cook watches through the glass. The Outer Cabinet wraps the whole assembly and carries the controls.

How it works

The High-Voltage Power System steps mains voltage up to several thousand volts through a transformer, capacitor, and rectifier diode, supplying the high-tension anode of the Magnetron. The magnetron is a vacuum tube in which electrons spiral past resonant cavities under a strong magnet, generating microwave energy at 2,450 MHz. That energy travels along the Waveguide, a metal channel, and enters the cavity, where it is absorbed by water, fats, and sugars in the food. The oscillating field flips polar molecules billions of times per second, and the resulting molecular friction produces heat throughout the food rather than only at the surface.

Because the standing-wave pattern leaves hot and cold spots, the Turntable Assembly rotates the load so heating evens out. The magnetron runs hot, so the Cooling Fan Assembly forces air across its cooling fins and through the cavity to carry away steam.

The Control Board sets cooking time and power level, modulated by duty-cycling the magnetron on and off, and enforces the door interlock chain that cuts high voltage the instant the door opens. A Grill Heating Element adds radiant browning that microwaves alone cannot deliver, and the Cavity Lamp illuminates the chamber. Four Base Foot support the cabinet.
