Commercial Washer-Extractor Product
Overview
Commercial washer-extractors dominate industrial laundry operations where load throughput and water retention are critical. Unlike domestic machines, they employ a suspended rotating drum as the wash chamber, with centrifugal extraction reaching 1200 rpm—extracting moisture down to 52% residual moisture content. The suspended-drum design isolates drum vibration from the cabinet, allowing operation at high speeds without transmission stress or structural noise.
The machine comprises a heavy stainless steel Drum Assembly suspended by springs and dampers inside a welded Cabinet Frame frame. Two independent motor systems drive the main wash motor and a separate high-speed extraction drive. The Control Panel integrates a PLC, touch interface, VFD, and safety interlocks to orchestrate programmable cycles for different fabric types.
A proportional Chemical Dosing System system delivers detergent, alkali, acid, and softener on demand throughout the cycle. The Water System manages hot and cold inlet flow, immersion heating, and drainage through a centrifugal pump. This modular architecture allows operators to customize wash recipes per load class without mechanical adjustment.
How It Works
The operator loads soiled fabric into the perforated drum, closes the front door, and selects a cycle on the touch display. The Programmable Controller validates door interlock and begins the wash phase.
During the wash phase, the AC Induction Motor drives the Drum Assembly at 40 rpm, slowly rotating the load. The Inlet Solenoid Valves admit water (cold, hot, or mixed) to the specified level. The Immersion Heater maintains temperature at 60–90°C depending on recipe. The peristaltic pumps inject detergent proportional to load size and soil level.
Wash action is purely gravitational—fabric tumbles and cascades over the drum baffles. The suspended Drum Assembly absorbs impact loads, and the hydraulic dampers limit lateral oscillation to ±5 mm. The compression springs beneath the drum support the entire load, typically 45 kg dry weight.
After 15–25 minutes of wash time, the Variable Frequency Drive ramps the motor to 120 rpm for drain. Dirty water exits through the drum perforations and the Drain Pump evacuates the cabinet to a floor drain. The Flow Meter monitors total water consumed, logged per cycle.
Next, the acid pump injects rinse alkali to neutralize detergent residue. Fresh water enters and drains twice. Finally, a fabric softener dose (optional) is injected before the final drain.
For extraction, the Extraction Motor engages independently, accelerating the Extract Gearbox and Extract Drive Shaft to spin the drum at 1200 rpm. G-forces radiate water outward through the perforations; centripetal acceleration reaches 28g at the drum surface. The Electromagnetic Brake holds the drum stationary until operator-initiated manual slowdown or automatic timeout.
Fabric temperature rises 10–15°C from friction during high-speed extraction, and residual moisture drops to 52%. A brief low-speed rotation (10 rpm) at the end evens fabric distribution before the door unlock signal.
The PLC logs cycle time, motor current, water usage, and temperature for compliance reporting. Proportional chemical dosing reduces chemical waste compared to manual dosing, and energy feedback from the Variable Frequency Drive allows operators to identify power anomalies (worn drum seals, motor imbalance).
Construction Details
The Drum Assembly is constructed from austenitic stainless steel (SS 304) for corrosion resistance and durability in acidic and alkaline environments. The drum perforations are 6 mm diameter, spaced 12 mm pitch, allowing water passage while containing fabric. Two bearing cartridges support the drum on the front and rear, rated continuously at 1200 rpm. The Drum Seal Assembly prevents water ingress into the rear bearing cavity.
The Cabinet Frame is mild steel ASTM A36 with 2 mm wall thickness, internally lined with rubber impact absorbers on the drum support frame. Four adjustable feet allow height compensation for uneven floors (±50 mm). The stainless door interlocks with a normally-open microswitch; the Programmable Controller prevents motor engagement unless the switch reads closed.
The wash motor couples through a flexible jaw coupling to a single-stage helical gearbox (5:1 reduction), outputting 290 rpm to the Drive Pulley. The pulley drives the drum via a reinforced rubber belt (classical A-section). A spring-applied brake on the motor shaft prevents drum creep during wash pauses.
The extract drive is independent: a 22 kW motor (1800 rpm) feeds a two-stage gearbox (1.5:1) and hollow drive shaft. The shaft couples directly to the drum hub via a stainless spline, allowing the drum to rotate independently at different speeds during wash and extract phases.
Temperature control is passive during wash (ambient inlet + detergent dissolution heat) and active via the Immersion Heater (18 kW), which maintains target temperature ±2°C. The VFD soft-starts motors, reducing inrush current from 80 A (direct-on-line) to 25 A, extending motor and contactor life.
The PLC communicates with the control module via Ethernet. Operators can remotely monitor cycle progress, log performance data, and adjust chemical recipes without opening the panel.
Commercial Operation
A typical 45 kg towel cycle consumes 120 L of water, 2.1 kWh electrical energy, and 1.2 L detergent. At 20 cycles per day, a facility processes 900 kg dry weight per machine. Water recovery systems can recirculate final rinses, reducing consumption to 80 L per cycle. Solvent-based dry cleaning machines operate separately; washer-extractors are primarily for aqueous detergent washing.
Maintenance intervals are 2000 operating hours for bearing cartridge inspection, 5000 hours for belt replacement, and 10,000 hours for gearbox oil change. The Drum Seal Assembly is replaced every 3000 hours to prevent motor bearing contamination.
Noise levels are typically 85 dB(A) at 1 m during spin, controlled by the dampers and rubberized cabinet lining. Vibration isolation feet reduce structural transmission to building slabs to <0.5 mm displacement at maximum speed.
