Gas Clothes Dryer

Product

Overview

A gas clothes dryer removes water from a wet load by tumbling it through a stream of hot air. Room air is pulled in, heated by a gas flame, blown through the rotating drum where it picks up moisture from the fabric, and pushed out a duct to the outdoors. The fuel is natural gas or propane, and a small electric motor turns the drum and runs the blower while the controls sequence the burner. Compared with an electric dryer, a gas model heats faster and costs less per load to run where gas is cheap, at the price of a gas connection and a flue path to the outside.

The machine is built around seven systems. The Cabinet and Drum holds and tumbles the load, the Blower and Airflow moves the air, the Gas Burner System heats it, the Drum Drive turns the drum, the Control and Ignition runs the cycle, the Door Assembly seals the front, and the Gas Supply Line feeds the fuel.

How it works

When a cycle starts, the Drive Motor spins the Tumbling Drum and the Blower Wheel at the same time. The blower draws air through the burner and into the drum, so the path is always under slight suction and any small gas leak is carried out the vent. The Control Board then powers the Glow-Bar Igniter, a silicon-carbide glow bar that heats to about 1000 C. Once it is hot, the board energises the two Valve Solenoid coils on the Gas Valve, gas flows through the Gas Orifice and the Mixing Tube, and the glow bar lights it at the Burner Tube. The Flame Sensor confirms the flame within a few seconds; if it sees nothing, the board shuts the valve so raw gas is never left flowing. The flame burns inside the Combustion Chamber, which hands its heat to the air entering the drum.

Drum and airflow

The Tumbling Drum is a perforated steel cylinder turning at about 50 rpm. Three Drum Baffle vanes inside lift the load and let it fall back through the hot air, which exposes every surface and prevents the clothes from packing into a ball. The drum rides on four Drum Roller wheels at the rear and slides on plastic Drum Glide pads at the front, with Felt Seal rings at each end to keep air from leaking around the rim. Air enters through a grille in the Rear Bulkhead, passes through the load, and leaves at the Lint Screen in the Front Bulkhead. The Blower Wheel in its Blower Housing then drives the moist air through the Exhaust Duct and out the 4-inch Vent Outlet. The screen has to be cleared often, because a clogged screen or vent cuts airflow, slows drying, and raises the risk of overheating.

Drive and controls

A single Drive Motor does double duty: a Motor Pulley drives the wide Drive Belt that wraps the drum, kept tight by the spring-loaded Idler Pulley, while the Blower Wheel mounts directly on the other shaft end. A Start Switch and a Run Capacitor get the induction motor up to speed. The Control and Ignition watches several sensors. The Moisture Sensor bars read how conductive the tumbling load is, so an auto cycle can stop when the fabric is dry rather than run a fixed time set on the Timer and Selector. The Cycling Thermostat cuts the burner on and off to hold the drum near its target temperature. Two safety devices stand behind it: a High-Limit Thermostat that kills the gas if the burner shroud runs too hot, and a one-shot Thermal Fuse that opens for good if a blocked vent drives the temperature past the limit. The Door Switch stops the motor and burner the moment the Door Assembly is opened.

Materials and gas supply

The cabinet uses Sheet Metal Panel steel with a baked enamel finish, and the combustion parts are aluminised or stainless steel to resist flame heat. The Gas Supply Line reaches the appliance through a manual Shutoff Valve, a coated stainless Flexible Connector, and a Pipe Nipple at the inlet. Dryers ship set for natural gas; a LP Conversion Kit swaps in a smaller orifice and a stiffer valve spring to run on propane, which is denser and burns at higher pressure.

Variants and use

Most gas dryers are 27-inch wide front loaders that sit beside a washer or stack above one. Models differ in drum size, in whether they use a simple Timer and Selector or sensor-based controls, and in the number of heat levels. All of them need an outside vent run kept short and clear, since the exhaust carries both moisture and the products of combustion. Gas dryers are common where a gas line already serves the laundry, and they pair with a standard washer to finish a wash load in 30-50 minutes.
