Water Ionizer Product
Overview
A water ionizer is an electrolysis device that separates incoming tap water into two streams: alkaline-ionized water (pH ~8–10) enriched with negatively charged hydroxide ions, and acidic-ionized water (pH ~3–5) enriched with positively charged hydrogen ions. Marketed for wellness benefits (alkaline water claims are debated in scientific literature), the device is also useful in industrial applications like sterilization and surface treatment.
The Electrolysis Chamber contains the Electrode Stack Assembly separated by Ion-Exchange Membranes. When AC mains power flows through the Power Supply & Distribution, a voltage of 20–100 V DC is applied across the electrodes. Incoming water from the Water Inlet Assembly flows through the chamber; ions migrate and separate, and electrolysis reactions at the electrode surfaces generate H⁺ (acidic) and OH⁻ (alkaline) ions. The Outlet & Discharge System delivers both streams through separate spouts, and the Pre-Filter Cartridge pre-treats water to prevent electrode fouling.
Electrolysis mechanism
Inside the chamber, the Titanium Electrode Plate electrodes are energized with opposite polarity. Water molecules (H₂O) and dissolved ions (Ca²⁺, Mg²⁺, Na⁺, Cl⁻, etc.) form the electrolyte.
At the cathode (negative electrode), reduction occurs:
- 2H₂O + 2e⁻ → H₂↑ + 2OH⁻ The cathode chamber becomes alkaline (high pH) due to hydroxide ion accumulation.
At the anode (positive electrode), oxidation occurs:
- 2H₂O → O₂↑ + 4H⁺ + 4e⁻ The anode chamber becomes acidic (low pH) due to hydrogen ion accumulation.
The Ion-Exchange Membranes are selectively permeable: cation-exchange membranes allow positive ions (Na⁺, H⁺) to migrate from anode to cathode chamber, while anion-exchange membranes allow negative ions (OH⁻, Cl⁻) to move the opposite direction. This ion segregation amplifies the pH separation beyond what would occur by simple electrolysis of distilled water alone.
Water conditioning and flow control
The Water Inlet Assembly connects to a standard kitchen faucet via the Faucet Adapter Connector. A Inlet Check Valve prevents backflow, and the Inlet Sediment Screen removes large particles. Water then flows through the Pre-Filter Cartridge, which contains Activated Carbon Block and mesh filtration. This conditioning removes chlorine, suspended solids, and some organic compounds, prolonging electrode life and ensuring stable ionization.
The Water Flow Sensor detects inlet flow and can trigger an alert if the filter is clogged (flow drops below 0.5 L/min). The Microcontroller and Control & Sensor Electronics read the sensor and adjust electrode voltage via the Voltage Regulator Module.
Output stream separation
Both alkaline and acidic water exit through independent Outlet Control Valves and faucets. The alkaline water is the primary product (drinking, cooking); the acidic water is often discarded or used for surface cleaning. The pH Electrode & Amplifier continuously monitors the output pH and feeds back to the control logic, allowing users to adjust ionization strength via a control dial or digital interface.
Ion concentration measurement
The Conductivity Sensor measures the total dissolved ion concentration (EC, or electrical conductivity). Tap water with higher mineral content ionizes more readily; very pure water (distilled, reverse-osmosis) ionizes poorly because there are insufficient ions to carry current across the electrodes.
Safety and longevity
The Voltage Regulator Module limits electrode voltage to prevent arcing or electrolyte decomposition. The Inline Fuse provides overcurrent protection if electrodes short-circuit. The Thermal Fuse (if incorporated) prevents runaway heating.
Electrode plates degrade over time due to corrosion and oxidation; typical lifespan is 3–5 years of daily use. Platinum-coated electrodes last longer than bare titanium. The Pre-Filter Cartridge must be replaced every 6–12 months depending on tap water quality and usage.
Claims and caution
Advocates claim alkaline water supports health, detoxification, and antioxidant effects. Scientific evidence is limited; medical organizations note that digestive acid quickly neutralizes ingested alkaline water. The device is primarily a water treatment tool; claims of health benefits should be evaluated independently.
