Over-the-Range Microwave
ProductOverview
An over-the-range microwave, often abbreviated OTR, replaces the vent hood above a kitchen range and does two unrelated jobs in one box. It is a full-power microwave oven, and it is the exhaust hood that pulls steam, smoke, and cooking odors off the burners below. Combining them saves the wall and cabinet space a separate hood would need, which is why the design dominates North American mid-range kitchens. The trade-off is that the blower sits higher and farther forward than a dedicated chimney hood, so it moves less air for the same noise.
The unit hangs from a Wall Mounting Plate screwed to the wall studs and from Toggle Mounting Bolt toggles that drop through the floor of the cabinet above. The whole load, close to thirty kilograms, is carried by those two anchor points, so installation templates and stud location matter more here than for any countertop appliance. The Outer Wrapper and Bottom Base Plate close the box, and the Cavity Shell forms the cooking chamber inside it.
Microwave generation
Cooking energy comes from the Magnetron Tube, a cavity magnetron tube that converts the high-voltage DC supply into 2.45 GHz microwaves at roughly 1000 watts of usable output. A pair of Magnetron Magnet Ring magnets bend the electron stream inside the tube into the resonant path that sustains oscillation. The tube runs hot, so a dedicated Magnetron Cooling Fan forces air across its cooling fins, and a Thermal Fuse bonded to the tube body cuts the line if cooling fails.
Energy leaves the magnetron through a short Waveguide that channels it into the cavity. Because a stationary field would leave hot and cold spots, a slow Mode Stirrer paddle sweeps the field around while the Turntable Synchronous Motor rotates the food on the Glass Turntable Tray. Between the moving field and the moving food, the heating evens out across the load.
High-voltage power
The magnetron needs about 4000 volts, supplied by the Power System. A heavy High-Voltage Transformer steps the line up, and a voltage-doubler built from the High-Voltage Capacitor and High-Voltage Diode develops the full anode voltage. This circuit stores a dangerous charge and is the reason microwave repair carries a real shock risk even when unplugged. An Line Fuse protects the primary side, and the low-voltage logic runs off a small separate Power Supply.
Ventilation
The hood half of the appliance is the Ventilation System assembly. The Exhaust Blower is a squirrel-cage design: a wide Blower Wheel spun by the Blower Motor inside a Blower Scroll Housing that turns the airflow toward the duct. Two Aluminum Grease Filter panels of layered aluminum mesh sit in the intake under the unit, trapping airborne grease before it coats the blower. They pull out for dishwasher cleaning.
The exhaust can route two ways. In ducted mode air leaves through the Vent Duct to the outdoors, and a spring-loaded Backdraft Damper stops outside air, wind, and pests from blowing back when the fan is off. In recirculating mode, used where no duct exists, the air instead passes through a Charcoal Filter that adsorbs odors and returns to the room. The installer sets the mode by reorienting the blower outlet and fitting or removing the charcoal element.
Door, safety, and cavity
The Door Assembly has to let the cook see in while keeping microwaves sealed inside. A Perforated RF Screen does this: the holes are far smaller than the 12 cm wavelength, so visible light passes but the field cannot. A quarter-wave Door Choke Seal around the door perimeter cancels any leakage at the gap. Three redundant Door Interlock Switch contacts confirm the door is shut, and if any disagrees the control kills the magnetron and can blow a fuse to force a service call. The Cavity Enamel Coating enamel on the Cavity Shell resists splatter and corrosion.
Lighting, control, and use
A Cooktop Lighting board throws two brightness levels of LED light onto the burners below through a Light Diffuser Lens diffuser, the same way a dedicated hood would. Operation is handled by the Control System system: a Main Control Board with its Microcontroller sequences cook time, power level, blower, and light, taking input from a Membrane Keypad and showing status on the Display Module. A Cavity Humidity Sensor in the exhaust path enables sensor cooking, where the control watches for the burst of steam from food reaching temperature and ends the cycle automatically rather than running a fixed timer.
Variants differ mainly in cavity size from 1.5 to 2.1 cubic feet, blower rating from 300 to 400 CFM, and finish. Higher trims add inverter power supplies for smoother low-power cooking, convection heating elements, and stainless interiors. The core split of microwave above, vent below, and a single shared control stays the same across the range.
