Overview

A trash compactor is a built-in kitchen appliance that crushes loose household waste into a dense block, so a single bag holds several days of trash instead of one. This is the common under-counter type, sized to drop into a 15-inch cabinet opening beside the dishwasher.

The whole machine is built around a welded Cabinet & Housing that carries the loads and the slides for a roll-out Drawer & Bin. The drawer holds a removable bin and a folding caddy that keeps a heavy-gauge bag open and flat against the walls, so the bag does not collapse and snag when the ram comes down. A matching front panel lets the unit disappear into the surrounding cabinetry, and a removable Charcoal Filter in the odor system traps the smell that compressed garbage would otherwise push out.

How it works

Loose trash compresses poorly, so the appliance trades speed for force. Pressing the Start Switch runs one cycle of the Compaction Drive: a reversible 1/3 HP motor spins a worm gearbox, and the gearbox turns two Acme power screws standing in the back corners of the cabinet. A travelling jack nut rides each screw, and a yoke ties both nuts to the flat platen of the Ram & Press Plate. As the screws turn, the nuts walk down and drag the platen into the bag, multiplying the small motor's torque into roughly 2,300 pounds of force at the plate. That is enough to crush cans, cartons and bottles into a compact slab. A stripper plate then peels the platen off the compressed block as the motor reverses and the ram retracts.

Because that force would be dangerous against a hand, the Safety & Interlocks interlocks gate every cycle. A removable key switch arms the unit so it cannot run unattended, an anti-tip switch only closes the circuit when the drawer is fully shut, and two limit switches stop the ram at the top and bottom of its stroke. The Control Board board ties these together: it drives the motor forward through one relay, watches the bottom limit, then reverses through a second relay to bring the ram home and leave the drawer ready to open.
