Island Range Hood
ProductOverview
An island range hood ventilates a cooktop set into a kitchen island, where there is no adjacent wall to mount against. It hangs from the ceiling on its own structure and is visible from every side, so it is built and finished as a furniture-grade object rather than tucked away. The job is the same as any hood: capture the plume of steam, grease aerosol, smoke, and combustion gases rising off the burners and either duct it outdoors or filter and return it. Doing that over an island is harder, because the rising plume has no wall to follow and is easily disturbed by room drafts, so island hoods run wider canopies and stronger blowers than comparable wall units.
The visible shell is the Canopy, a deep Stainless Canopy Shell formed from SUS304 stainless. Around its lower edge a Grease Capture Tray collects condensed grease that drains into two removable Removable Grease Cup cups, and an Inner Flow Baffle shapes the airflow toward the blower intake so the canopy fills evenly instead of pulling only from the center.
Suspension and structure
Because nothing behind the hood carries load, the Suspension Frame frame is the part that keeps it safe overhead. An Ceiling Mounting Plate bolts to a joist or to blocking added between joists, and four threaded Threaded Support Rod rods drop from it to the Canopy Mounting Bracket brackets on the canopy. The Leveling Nut nuts on each rod let the installer plumb the canopy and set its height precisely, which matters because an out-of-level island hood is obvious from across the room. Final height is set 650 to 750 mm above the cooktop: high enough to clear tall pots and a cook's head, low enough that the canopy still captures the plume before room air scatters it.
Blower and airflow
The Blower System is the engine of the hood. An Blower Motor spins two Centrifugal Impeller centrifugal wheels inside an Blower Housing, pulling air up through the filters and pushing it into the duct. Two impellers in series give the static pressure needed to drive 600 CFM through a long ceiling duct run, which a single wheel would struggle to do. An Motor Run Capacitor sets the run phase for the motor, and the Ball Bearing pair carries the shaft. The whole blower sits on rubber Vibration Isolation Mount isolators so motor hum and impeller noise do not telegraph into the canopy and out into a quiet kitchen.
Filtration
Grease never reaches the blower untouched because the Filter Set stands in the airflow first. Four Stainless Baffle Filter stainless baffle filters force the air through tight S-shaped channels; grease droplets are too heavy to follow the turns, so they strike the baffle walls, condense, and run down into the capture tray. Baffle filters are preferred on island hoods over mesh because they handle high airflow with less pressure loss and survive repeated dishwasher cleaning. Each filter drops into an Filter Frame and locks with a spring Filter Latch for tool-free removal.
Duct cover and exhaust
Above the canopy the Duct Cover hides the duct between hood and ceiling. It is a two-piece telescoping flue: a fixed Upper Flue Section near the ceiling and a Lower Flue Section that slides to meet the canopy, so one product fits a range of ceiling heights. Flue Retaining Bracket brackets hold the upper section to the ceiling plate. Inside, a Duct Transition Collar adapts the blower outlet to the 150 mm round duct, and a spring Backdraft Damper closes when the blower stops so outdoor air, cold drafts, and insects cannot enter. Where outside ducting is impossible the same shell runs in recirculating mode with a charcoal element added in the airflow.
Lighting and control
Four LED Spotlight Module spotlights, fed by a constant-current LED Driver, light the cooktop through clear Light Lens lenses. They are dimmable so the hood doubles as ambient lighting over the island when no one is cooking. The Control System system runs everything: an Main Control Board with its Microcontroller switches the blower speeds and lights, taking input from a Capacitive Touch Panel on the canopy face and from a handheld RF Remote Control for use across the kitchen. A Heat Sensor reads the rising air temperature and can auto-boost the blower to its top speed when it detects a sudden heat spike from searing or a boil-over, then ramp back down once the air cools.
Variants and use
Island hoods scale mainly by canopy width, from 750 mm over a single cooktop to 1200 mm over a wide professional range, with blower ratings climbing in step. Shapes range from flat low-profile boxes to tall pyramid and cylinder canopies chosen for looks. Premium units add perimeter-extraction slots that speed the air at the canopy edge to grab the plume sooner, heat-recovery options, and quieter remote blowers mounted in the attic. Across all of them the parts split the same way: a canopy that captures, baffle filters that strip grease, a blower that moves air, a flue that hides the duct, and a control that ties speed and light together.
