Snow Effect Machine Product
Overview
Snow machines create the illusion of falling snow on stage by mixing and dispersing a proprietary water-based or oil-based "snow fluid" as fine aerosol particles. The effect works best in cool environments or when the fluid is cold, causing it to linger in the air rather than evaporate immediately. The Pump Module draws fluid from the Fluid Reservoir and pressurizes it through a rotating Mesh Agitator, where mesh netting breaks the fluid into tiny droplets. A variable-speed Blower Assembly carries those particles downstage in a gentle, dispersed curtain.
Fluid circulation and aeration
The Gear Pump is a positive-displacement design, ideal for the viscous snow fluid used in professional machines. It draws from the tank sump through a Suction Strainer and pushes the pressurized flow into the Mesh Agitator. The pump speed is controlled via the DMX Control Board, allowing operators to modulate the intensity of the effect from a fade-on cue to full-intensity snow. A Check Valve prevents backflow when the pump shuts down.
The Mesh Agitator is the heart of snow generation. As pressurized fluid enters, a slowly rotating Agitator Drum lined with Nylon Mesh Sock agitates the liquid. The mesh acts as both a filter and an aerator, breaking fluid into fine droplets and allowing air to mix in, creating a suspension of particles. The Agitator Motor runs the drum at 100–300 rpm, a speed slow enough to avoid overheating yet fast enough to maintain consistent particle generation.
Temperature control
Snow fluid viscosity is temperature-sensitive. Too warm, and it evaporates before reaching the floor; too cold, and it clumps. The Tank Heater maintains the tank at 35–45 °C via an electric Heating Element and a Heater Thermostat. This is essential during winter performances or when snow is drawn from a cold outdoor reservoir. The Tank Body is insulated to minimize heat loss, and the Temperature Probe provides real-time feedback to prevent overshooting.
Air dispersal
The Blower Assembly is a variable-speed axial or centrifugal fan driven by a powerful AC motor. It draws air through the agitator's discharge port and continues to break apart any clumps of particle agglomeration, then directs the mist downstage through Outlet Ducting. The Fan Speed Controller allows DMX or manual adjustment of fan speed, so an operator can dial in the spread pattern and drift of the snow curtain. A effect-snow-machine-pulley-tensioner keeps the drive Drive Belt at optimal tension.
DMX addressability
The DMX Control Board receives RS485 DMX512 signals and decodes them into relay commands. Channels can be assigned to pump on/off, fan speed fade, and heater control. This allows snow cues to be precisely timed to music or actor movement, and provides smooth intensity ramps instead of abrupt on-off transitions. The DMX status is indicated by a DMX Status LED, showing lock and signal health.
Maintenance and storage
The Suction Strainer protects the pump from sediment buildup in the snow fluid, but must be checked and cleaned monthly. The Nylon Mesh Sock is a consumable and should be replaced every 20–40 operating hours, or when visible clogging reduces particle size. The Drain Plug allows seasonal emptying of the tank to prevent fluid degradation over off-season storage.
