Foam Machine

Product

Overview

A foam machine creates expansible foam by mixing bubble solution with compressed air and directing the aerated mixture through a foam net. Unlike fog (which hangs and diffuses), foam is light and buoyant, spreading across the floor and filling the lower portion of a venue quickly. The effect is dramatic and participatory, audiences experience foam rising around their feet. Professional foam machines are designed for theaters, music venues, and club installations, balancing output volume against cartridge life.

The Solution Pump draws concentrate from the Solution Tank and feeds it to a Mixing Chamber. Simultaneously, the Air Supply System compresses air to 3–6 bar and routes it to the same mixing chamber. The two streams combine, and the pressurized aerated mixture is forced through a foam Foam Cartridge, which contains a Foam Net of open-cell foam. As the liquid-air mixture passes through the net, it breaks into countless tiny bubbles, emerging as voluminous, stable foam.

Solution preparation

Foam concentrate is typically supplied as a concentrate mixed with water at a ratio of 1:10 to 1:20 by volume. The Solution Tank holds pre-mixed solution. The solution does not need to be heated, ambient temperature is sufficient, but the tank includes a Suction Filter to prevent particulates from fouling the Pump Head. The Suction Tube is weighted so the intake always draws from the bottom of the tank, avoiding sediment.

Peristaltic pumping

The Solution Pump uses a Pump Motor to drive rollers that compress silicone tubing in a sequence, creating a positive-displacement action. This method avoids metal-to-metal contact with the solution, preventing damage to delicate foam-stabilizing additives. The flow rate is 1–5 L/min, modulated via PWM from the Control Board. At higher flow rates, foam density decreases (more air per unit of solution); at lower rates, foam becomes denser and longer-lasting.

Air compression

The Air Supply System uses an oil-free rotary-screw compressor to avoid introducing silicone or mineral oil into the foam, which would break down the bubble structure. The compressor output is 50 L/min at 6 bar. The Pressure Regulator allows fine tuning of the air pressure: higher pressure creates finer, more delicate bubbles; lower pressure produces larger bubbles and faster foam output. An Air Filter removes compressor dust before the air reaches the mixing chamber.

Mixing and expansion

The Mixing Chamber is a confined space where solution and compressed air are brought together turbulently. The design encourages mixing without allowing the foam to form inside the chamber, which would clog the outlet. Once the pressurized foam mixture reaches the Foam Cartridge, it expands rapidly through the Foam Net. A Foam Net is typically made of melamine or polyurethane with 30–40 pores per inch (ppi). This density is a compromise: finer mesh produces smaller, more delicate bubbles, while coarser mesh allows faster output.

Cartridge life and replacement

The Foam Cartridge is a consumable, lasting 2–4 hours of continuous operation before foam output drops due to clogging or foam-net material fatigue. Many venues have 2–3 cartridges on hand, allowing for quick field swaps. The cartridge snaps into the machine with a Nozzle integral to the body, so no tools are needed for replacement. End-of-cartridge is signaled by foam output becoming noticeably weaker or uneven.

DMX and manual control

The Control Board can accept either DMX512 cues (for programmable intensity and duration) or a wired Manual Trigger with a Push Button for live operator control. In DMX mode, channels control solution pump speed and air compressor on/off. In manual mode, the button sends power to both systems simultaneously. A Safety Guard prevents accidental activation.

Maintenance and safety

After each use, the Pump Head and Mixing Chamber should be flushed with clean water to prevent solution residue from hardening inside. The Air Filter should be replaced every 50–100 operating hours. The Suction Filter should be cleaned weekly if running frequently. Pressure relief is managed by a low-cost party-foam-machine-relief-valve set at ~2 bar above normal operation, preventing compressor overpressure.
