Portable Vocal Booth

Product

Overview

A portable vocal booth is a lightweight, collapsible acoustic enclosure designed to improve vocal recording in untreated or reverberant spaces. Unlike permanent isolation rooms, which cost tens of thousands and occupy permanent floor space, a portable booth sets up in minutes around a microphone and provides sufficient absorption and isolation to achieve studio-quality vocal takes in home, rehearsal, or location settings.

The booth is constructed from a collapsible Frame Assembly of aluminum extrusions joined with quick-connect brackets, surrounded by absorptive Acoustic Panel Assembly made of fiberglass core and silencer foam. A Door and Window Assembly with observation window allows the performer or engineer to enter without disrupting acoustic performance, and a Ventilation and Silencer System system prevents thermal buildup during long sessions.

How it works

The acoustic performance of the booth depends on absorption and reflection dampening. The Acoustic Panel Assembly, each consisting of a rigid fiberglass Fiberglass Core bonded to a resilient melamine Foam Silencer Facing, work in tandem: the fiberglass absorbs mid and high frequencies (500 Hz and above) through viscous dissipation, while the foam layer extends absorption down to lower frequencies (200 Hz and below) through porosity and flow resistance. This dual-layer approach achieves approximately 10–15 dB attenuation of speech frequencies, a significant improvement over untreated drywall.

The interior surfaces are wrapped in flame-rated Acoustic Fabric, both for safety and to ensure consistent acoustic performance; bare foam would absorb moisture and degrade over time. The Frame Assembly distributes the weight of the absorptive panels across corner Corner Brackets and Horizontal Struts, with stainless steel Panel Mounting Brackets securing each panel.

Reflection control within the booth is critical: the Acoustic Panel Assembly on all six surfaces (left side, right side, back, and ceiling) prevent room modes and flutter echo that would corrupt the vocal tone. A typical untreated room exhibits reverberation times of 0.5–1.0 seconds or more; the booth reduces this to < 0.3 seconds, providing a dry, isolated vocal sound suitable for direct use in a mix or for overdubbing in production.

The Door and Window Assembly is hinged and lined with absorptive material to maintain acoustic performance when closed. A Window Pane of transparent polycarbonate allows line-of-sight between the performer and engineer, enabling non-verbal communication. The Door Latch uses either a magnetic catch (simple but less repeatable) or a mechanical lock (ensuring consistent closure and seal).

Thermal and acoustic comfort

Extended vocal recording sessions generate heat, especially if the performer is energetic or the studio is warm. The Ventilation and Silencer System system addresses this: a quiet EC Blower Motor (40–80 CFM) draws fresh air through an Intake Duct Assembly lined with Acoustic Silencer foam, preventing the fan noise from reaching the microphone. Air exits through a flexible Exhaust Duct ducted away from the booth. A motorized or manual Damper Valve allows the operator to throttle airflow without killing the ventilation entirely.

The booth is supplied with a Stand Adapter that allows a standard microphone stand to mount inside, and a Microphone Stand Clip to secure the microphone itself. Vibration isolation is critical: the Vibration Isolator feet (rubber or elastomer) decouple the frame from the floor, preventing footsteps or equipment vibration from coupling into the microphone signal.

Assembly and deployment

The booth ships unassembled in a compact case and requires no specialized tools. The Frame Assembly aluminum rails are connected via quick-release Fastener Set bolts and wing nuts, and the panels clip onto frame Panel Mounting Brackets using stainless steel C-clamps or friction-lock connectors. Typical assembly time is 20–30 minutes, making the booth suitable for location recording, remote sessions, and temporary studio setups.

The trade-off compared to a permanent booth is slightly lower isolation (10–15 dB vs. 20+ dB for construction-grade isolation rooms) and reduced low-frequency absorption below 100 Hz, but the portability and cost savings make it the standard solution for professional podcasting, voice-over, and home recording applications.
