Seismic Vibrator Truck

Product

Overview

A seismic vibrator truck is the energy source for land seismic surveys. Instead of setting off explosives to send sound into the ground, it presses a steel plate to the earth and shakes it through a controlled range of frequencies, sending a long, precise vibration down into the rock. The waves reflect off the boundaries between rock layers and return to geophones spread across the surface, and from those echoes geophysicists build an image of the structure below, used to find oil, gas, and water or to map a construction site. The vibrator's advantage over dynamite is that its signal is exactly known and repeatable, so the recording can be processed to a sharpness that a single impulsive shot cannot match.

The truck is a purpose-built machine. The Carrier Vehicle buggy moves it across rough ground, the Vibrator Assembly assembly is the source itself, the Lift and Isolation system presses and raises it, the Hydraulic Power feed it oil, the Vibrator Control Electronics generate and control the sweep, the Navigation and Positioning system places each point, and the crew works from the Operator Cab.

How vibroseis works

The principle is to put a known signal into the ground and correlate the recorded echoes against it. The Vibrator Assembly does this by driving a heavy Reaction Mass up and down with a hydraulic Hydraulic Actuator, which forces a stiff Baseplate against the earth in an oscillation that sweeps smoothly from a low frequency to a high one over several seconds. Because the input is a known sweep, the recording truck can correlate the returns and compress them into sharp reflections, even though each is tiny. A Servo Valve controls the actuator, Accumulator accumulators supply the peak oil flow each cycle demands, and Stilt Isolator isolators keep the energy in the ground rather than the buggy.

Closed-loop force control

The signal is only useful if the force actually applied to the ground matches the intended sweep, and the ground reacts back, so the system runs closed loop. The Vibrator Control Electronics controller generates the swept signal in the Microcontroller and drives the servo valve, then estimates the true ground force from two sensors: a Mass Accelerometer on the reaction mass and a Baseplate Accelerometer on the baseplate. The weighted sum of those accelerations gives the force going into the earth, and the controller corrects the valve in real time so the actual force follows the target sweep. A Sync Radio synchronizes the sweep start with the recording truck and with the other vibrators in the convoy, so all sources fire together to the same time base.

Lift, hold-down, and isolation

For the baseplate to couple energy into the ground it must be pressed down hard, and for the truck to move it must be lifted clear. The Lift and Isolation system manages both. Two Lift Cylinder cylinders lower the baseplate to the ground and raise it for travel, and a Hold-Down Beam beam transfers part of the buggy's weight onto the plate during a sweep so it stays in contact through the full force cycle. While vibrating, Air Isolation Bag air springs isolate the buggy so its mass does not soak up the energy, and Lift Guide guides keep the plate aligned as it moves. Good ground coupling and isolation are what separate a clean source signal from a distorted one.

Hydraulic power

The vibrator is a large hydraulic load that runs continuously, so the Hydraulic Power system is sized accordingly. Two Main Pump piston pumps driven by the Carrier Engine supply the actuator and servo valve, a Charge Pump keeps the actuator and accumulators primed, and the oil draws from a large Hydraulic Tank through fine Filter filters that protect the servo valve. Because sweeping all day generates heat, a large Oil Cooler sheds it. The flow demand is high because the actuator must reverse the heavy reaction mass many times a second across the whole sweep.

Carrier, navigation, and cab

The Carrier Vehicle is an articulated buggy on wide Flotation Tire flotation tires, driven through a Transmission to all four Drive Axle axles so it crosses desert, marsh, and scrub. The Navigation and Positioning system uses an RTK GNSS Receiver receiver and a Guidance Display to steer the driver onto each surveyed source point, since the survey design specifies exactly where every sweep happens. The crew works from the Operator Cab, an insulated Cab Shell with a Control Panel for vibrator status and Cab HVAC for long days.

Operation and use

Vibrator trucks work in convoys of two to four units that drive to a source point, lower their plates, sweep together, lift, and roll to the next point, repeating thousands of times across a survey. Sweeping several vibrators at once adds energy and, with coded sweeps, lets crews acquire faster. Vibroseis is the dominant land seismic source because it is repeatable, tunable in frequency, and far safer and more permittable than explosives near roads, towns, and pipelines. The recordings it produces feed the same subsurface imaging that guides where a Water Well Drilling Rig or an exploration well is later sited.
