Track Laying Machine

Product

Overview

A track laying machine builds railway where none exists yet. It advances on a hybrid undercarriage, rear Rail Bogie units rolling on the track it has just laid, a front Crawler Unit walking on the bare earthworks, while a continuous process under its Bridge Girder places sleepers at exact pitch and threads long-welded rails onto them. Machines of this class (the Plasser & Theurer SVM, Harsco/PTH P-811, and the Russian/Chinese P-95 family) lay 1.8–2.5 km of complete track in a shift with a crew that would have needed days using panel methods.

Material flow

Everything the machine consumes arrives behind it on a material train: flat wagons stacked with concrete sleepers, plus rail strings already unloaded along the formation shoulder. Two Material Gantry Crane portals run on roller paths along the wagon tops, each lifting an 8–12 t layer of sleepers with its Spreader Beam and carrying it forward over the train to the machine. Travel position comes from Encoder feedback on the Gantry Travel Drive wheels so two cranes can shuttle on the same path without conflict.

At the machine, the Sleeper Separator destacks the delivered pack and feeds sleepers single-file onto the Sleeper Conveyor running the length of the girder. At the nose, the Placement Unit lowers each sleeper onto the prepared formation, square to the track axis. Release is triggered by the Spacing Encoder measuring ground distance, holding pitch at 600 or 650 mm regardless of advance speed, while the Laser Reference Unit keeps the laying head on the surveyed alignment.

Rail threading

Threading is the step that distinguishes this machine from a crane. The long-welded rail strings, 120–400 m each, lie on the shoulder where a rail train dropped them. Rail Lifting Tongs lift each string into a path of flanged Rail Roller Guide rollers that bend it through a controlled lateral S-curve, within the rail's elastic limit, from the shoulder position to the track centre. Hydraulic Rail Pull Clamp grips drag the string forward as the machine advances, and the final Gauge Head sets both rails down onto the sleeper rail seats at 1435 mm gauge. Immediately behind, the Fastening Station applies elastic clips so the rear bogies always run on fastened track. The track leaving the machine is geometrically rough; tamping and dynamic stabilisation follow in later passes.

Power and propulsion

A single Diesel Engine of 400–700 kW feeds everything. Working travel uses a Hydrostatic Drive loop because the process demands smooth creep between zero and walking pace, with frequent metered pauses while a sleeper releases or a clamp re-grips. For repositioning, Axle Drive finals engage the rail bogies and the machine runs in a train consist at up to 100 km/h, braked by its UIC-compatible Brake System.

Every gripper, hoist, clamp, and drive is hydraulic. The Hydraulic Pump Station delivers up to 350 bar through Proportional Valve Bank manifolds, with Hydraulic Accumulator bottles absorbing the pressure spikes of clamp cycles and Pressure Sensor monitoring on each circuit. The Hydraulic Tank carries filtration and cooling sized for continuous multi-shift possessions, matched by a 1500–3000 L Fuel Tank.

Operation

Two Operator Station consoles control the machine: one overlooking the laying zone at the nose, one managing material flow and the gantries. Interlocks tie the stations together, the machine cannot advance unless the placement unit, threading rollers, and rear clipping are all in a permissive state, and a CCTV System gives operators sight of the separator and roller paths they cannot see directly. The Telescopic Section of the girder retracts for transport clearance gauges, and Crew Walkway gangways let the fastening gang work along the girder while the machine creeps. A typical crew is 8–15: two operators, gantry drivers, and the clip gang at the fastening station.
