Heritage Streetcar

Product

Overview

A heritage streetcar is a vintage-style electric tram operated on tourist routes and short city loops, either a genuine restored car or a modern replica built to the same pattern. It draws traction power from an overhead contact wire at 600-750 V DC, picked up by a Trolley Pole tipped with a grooved Trolley Wheel. Two Traction Motor units, one on each axle of one or both trucks, drive the car through nose-suspended gearing. The car documented here is a double-truck, double-ended design: it has a controller and a brake valve at each end so it can reverse direction at the end of the line without turning around. The body sits on two Motor Truck units, each free to swivel under a Center Plate pivot. Top speed is modest, around 25-40 km/h, because the routes are short and street-running demands frequent stops. The whole machine is built for slow, frequent-stop service with high reliability and easily reparable, mostly mechanical, subsystems.

Carbody and underframe

The Carbody Shell is a composite structure typical of the streetcar era. A riveted steel Steel Underframe forms the load-bearing base, with two fishbelly Center Sill beams running the length of the car and a Body Bolster over each truck to carry the weight down into the Center Plate pivots. On top of that frame stands a wood cage, the Wood Body Framing, built from ash Body Post members tied by belt rails and roofed by curved Roof Carline ribs. The exterior is clad in pressed steel Side Sheet panels, and the roof is a Clerestory Roof with a raised center deck, small Ventilator Sash windows for air, and a painted Roof Canvas weather skin over the Roof Board planking. Side windows are drop sashes that slide down into the wall. Length over the body is roughly 13-15 m and empty mass is around 18-22 t, most of it in the steel underframe and the two trucks.

Trucks, wheels, and traction

Each Motor Truck is a swing-bolster truck with cast-steel Truck Side Frame members joined by transoms. Two Wheelset assemblies sit in the truck, each a forged Driving Axle carrying two flanged Tram Wheel units of roughly 660-790 mm diameter and a driven Axle Bull Gear bull gear. The axle journals run in roller Journal Box bearings. Drive comes from the Traction Motor, a DC series-wound machine of about 40-75 kW with a wound Commutator armature, carbon Brush Holder sets, and field poles. The motor is nose-suspended: one side bolts to the truck transom, the other side rides on the axle through the Nose-Suspended Gearbox, so the Motor Pinion stays meshed with the axle bull gear at a fixed center distance, roughly 4.5:1 reduction. A series-wound DC motor produces high torque at low speed, which suits a heavy car making frequent standing starts. The grooved Trolley Wheel at the top of the Trolley Pole rolls along the contact wire; the Trolley Base keeps the pole sprung up against the wire, and a Trolley Retriever catches the rope if the pole jumps off at a frog or curve.

Control and braking

Heritage cars keep the original manual control rather than fitting modern chopper or inverter drives. The Drum Controller is a hand-turned Controller Drum whose copper segments make and break contact against spring Contact Finger sets. As the motorman notches up, the controller cuts steps out of the Resistor Bank, a stack of cast Grid Resistor elements under the floor, and shifts the two motors from series to parallel for higher speed. An Arc Chute quenches the arc each time a contact opens, and the Line Breaker protects the whole power circuit. Braking is layered. First the motors are used as generators in dynamic braking, feeding current back into the resistor grids so the car slows and the energy leaves as heat. Below dynamic-brake speed the Brake System takes over: a Air Compressor keeps the Air Reservoir charged to about 6-7 bar, and the motorman's Brake Valve admits air to the Brake Cylinder units, which work the Brake Rigging and press cast Brake Shoe shoes against the wheel treads. For an emergency stop a Magnetic Track Brake electromagnet clamps directly to the rail.

Electrical and auxiliaries

Line voltage is far too high for cabin lighting and control logic, so a Motor-Generator or a static Power Supply converts it down to a low-voltage bus distributed through the Fuse Panel. That bus runs the ceiling Interior Lamp fixtures, the end Headlight units, the door engines, and the bell, with a Control Battery backing the circuit so the lights and controls hold up when the pole leaves the wire briefly. A small Control Board handles auxiliary logic. The Interior is fitted out in period style: reversible Walkover Seat units whose backs flip over so passengers always face forward, brass Grab Rail stanchions, roller Window Shade shades, and a Fare Register overhead. Folding Folding Door doors at the platforms are worked by a pneumatic Door Engine.

How it operates and variants

In service the motorman stands at one end, releases the Line Breaker, and notches the Drum Controller up through its resistance and series-parallel steps to accelerate. The Foot Gong warns pedestrians, and the Pilot / Fender fender at the front is there to sweep a person or obstruction off the rail rather than under the wheels. At the end of the line the motorman walks to the other end, swings the Trolley Pole around to trail the new direction, and takes the controller there. Variants are common in heritage fleets: single-truck cars are shorter and lighter, some cars use a pantograph instead of a trolley pole, and a few restored interurban cars carry larger motors for faster running between towns. The defining traits stay the same across all of them: overhead DC supply, series DC traction motors, manual drum control, and a mix of dynamic and air braking, all kept deliberately period-correct so the car looks and runs the way it did when built.
