Observation Car

Product

Overview

The Observation Car is a railway passenger carriage placed at the rear of a scenic train so that passengers can watch the landscape through large windows and a raised glass dome. A welded Underframe carries an insulated Carbody Shell shell whose rounded rear end and enlarged window bays distinguish it from an ordinary coach. The interior is given over to an Observation Lounge of swivel chairs and a bar rather than fixed rows of seating, lit through extensive Panoramic Glazing and topped by a vista dome. Behind the lounge an open Rear Platform lets passengers stand in the air at the very end of the train. The car runs on two Passenger Bogie bogies, couples to the train through front Coupler and Drawgear drawgear, stops under a pneumatic Air Brake System, and is served by a roof HVAC Unit unit and an Electrical System system. A typical car weighs around 46 tonnes empty and runs at speeds up to 160 km/h.

Underframe and carbody

The structural base is the Underframe, a welded steel chassis with a Center Sill box beam running end to end as the main draft member. Two Side Sill members run along the edges, Headstock cross beams close each end, and six Cross Bearer beams support the floor while tying the side sills together. At each bogie position a Body Bolster transfers the carbody weight to the bogie center pivot. Because the open deck sits past the rear bogie, an Platform Cantilever frame extends beyond the last bolster to carry it, and the whole assembly is bolted with a Fastener Set. Above the underframe, the Carbody Shell is a stressed-skin shell: two Side Wall Frame side walls cut with oversized window openings, an arched Roof Structure with a raised aperture for the dome, a curved Rear End Frame forming the rounded observation end, a Floor Pan, and several Sheet Metal Panel stressed-skin sheets that carry load with the framing. A continuous Body Insulation blanket of mineral wool and foam lines the walls, roof, and floor.

Panoramic glazing

The feature that defines the car is its Panoramic Glazing. Twelve Picture Window side windows are far larger than standard coach windows, each a laminated double-glazed pane that fills nearly the full height of its bay. Over the lounge, a raised Dome Glazing of curved laminated safety glass forms a vista dome that opens the roofline to the sky and the upper scenery. At the rounded end a curved Rear Window gives a view back along the line just traveled. Every pane sits in an anodized Window Frame with a thermal break and a rubber gasket, sealed against the weather by an O-Ring Set. Because so much glass admits heat and glare, a tinted Solar Control Film is laminated to the panes to reflect infrared and reduce the cooling load on the roof unit.

Observation lounge

Inside, the Observation Lounge replaces fixed seating with twenty-four Swivel Seat chairs on locking swivel bases, so passengers can turn to face whichever side the view is on. Eight Lounge Table tables sit between the seat pairs. A short Dome Stairs stair leads up to the raised dome seating, and an Bar Counter with a sink and chiller provides drinks service. The floor is finished with bonded Floor Carpet, the ceiling with eight Ceiling Panel panels that conceal ducts and wiring, and six Interior Handrail grab rails steady passengers as they move about while the train is running.

Rear platform

The Rear Platform is the open deck at the rounded end where the car runs last in the train. An anti-slip Platform Deck sits on the cantilever frame, enclosed by a perimeter Platform Railing of brass or stainless tube. An Platform Gate closes the deck when the car is not at the rear, and a red Tail Light marks the end of the train as required for running. A retractable Retractable Awning shades the platform in fair weather. The platform is the reason an observation car is normally marshaled at the very back, since an open deck cannot be placed mid-train.

Bogies, brakes, and services

Each Passenger Bogie is a two-axle passenger bogie tuned for ride comfort. A welded Bogie Frame carries two Wheelset wheelsets, each a forged Axle pressed with two monobloc Rail Wheel wheels turning on Ball Bearing journal bearings. Suspension works in two stages: Coil Spring primary springs in the Axle Box axle boxes, and Air Spring secondary air springs that also level the floor as load changes, with four Hydraulic Damper dampers controlling bounce and yaw. Braking uses the Air Brake System system: a Distributor Valve watches the brake pipe and ports air from the Air Reservoir tanks into four Brake Cylinder cylinders that clamp the Brake Disc discs, with a Pressure Sensor completing the pneumatics. The front Coupler and Drawgear joins the rest of the train through a Coupler Head, an Draft Gear cushion, and two Side Buffer buffers. Climate comes from the roof HVAC Unit unit, where an AC Compressor, Condenser Coil, and Evaporator Coil cooling loop plus a Heating Element bank feed conditioned air through the Supply Ductwork under an HVAC Controller sized for the heavy solar gain of the glazed lounge. The Electrical System system draws from the train line through a Power Supply converter, backed by an Backup Battery bank and distributed through an Distribution Box and a Wire Bundle to the Lounge Lighting and Power Sockets outlets, with lounge lighting kept low at night so the windows stay clear of reflections.
