Double-Decker Bus Product

Overview

A double-decker bus stacks two passenger saloons on a single-decker footprint, carrying about 87 people in 10.9 m of kerb length where an articulated bus needs 18 m. The configuration dominates British and Hong Kong city fleets because kerb space, not road space, limits urban bus capacity. The defining constraints are height — around 4.4 m total, leaving only ~1.7 m of upper-deck headroom after structure and lower saloon — and stability, since UK regulations require a laden double-decker to hold a tilt-table angle past 28 degrees.

Structure

There is no separate chassis. The Two-Level Body Structure is integral: a welded Underframe carrying axles and drivetrain, square-tube Body Pillar Set verticals at every window bay, and a stressed Upper Floor Deck that ties the walls together and carries the upper saloon's roughly 4-tonne crush load. The Roof Structure is deliberately light — every kilogram up high costs tilt angle — but must still pass the ECE R66 rollover survival-space test. Skins are bonded Sheet Metal Panel aluminum or composite, with the Window Set glazing bonded in as a mild structural element.

The Staircase is regulated furniture: eight Stair Tread risers with contrasting nosings between Stair Stringer members, twin continuous Stair Handrail runs because passengers climb while the bus moves, a fall-preventing Stair Enclosure, and Stair Light LEDs on every tread. Its position — usually ahead of the front axle — sets the whole interior layout.

Drivetrain and running gear

The Drivetrain packages a transverse Diesel Engine (6.7 to 10.8 L, 180 to 250 kW) across the rear overhang, keeping the floor between the axles flat and low. It drives through an automatic Automatic Gearbox whose integral Hydraulic Retarder takes most service braking — in stop-start duty with 18 tonnes, friction brakes alone would need relining monthly. The Drive Axle uses hub reduction to clear the low floor; Euro VI compliance hangs on the Exhaust Aftertreatment DPF/SCR pack, and the side-mounted Cooling Pack keeps the radiator out of the rear engine box's dead air.

The Air Suspension System is full air on both axles: six Air Spring Bellows bellows hold ride frequency nearly constant from empty to crush load — essential when payload approaches half of gross weight — while Height Control Valve units kneel the entrance 70 to 100 mm at stops. An engine-driven Air Compressor charges suspension and brakes to about 12 bar. The Braking System uses Air Disc Brake units at all six wheel positions under an EBS Control Module that blends friction, retarder, and ABS; Spring Brake Actuator actuators give a fail-safe park brake that clamps when air is released.

Saloons

The Lower Saloon is the accessibility deck: step-free Lower Saloon Flooring at about 320 mm, around 30 Seat Assembly positions over and between the Wheel Arch Box intrusions, a Wheelchair Bay with rear-facing backrest, and a forest of Grab Pole stanchions for standees. The Upper Saloon is seated-only — standing is prohibited up top for stability — with about 55 seats under the 1.7 m ceiling, Upper Deck Handrail runs for moving passengers, and the prized Front Bulkhead Seat Set over the driver's head. Emergency Hammer points mark the upper-deck escape windows.

Driver and passenger systems

The Driver Station is an enclosed cab behind an Assault Screen, with kneel, door, and ramp controls on the Dashboard and twin Camera Monitor displays substituting for the sightlines a driver physically cannot have to the upper deck — supplemented by eight CCTV Camera positions. Fares clear through the front-door Fare System.

Each Entry Door is a two-leaf inward-glide unit driven by a Door Actuator with Door Edge Sensor strips that reopen on obstruction and Hall Sensor position feedback into the door interlock, which prevents driving away with a door open. The Wheelchair Ramp deploys at the centre door with the kneel. Climate is one Saloon HVAC Unit circuit per deck — the upper saloon gains solar load fast in summer — and passenger information runs through Destination Display LED signs and the Stop Request System, whose twenty Bell Push buttons on both decks chime once and latch the stopping sign.

Operating economics

A double-decker costs roughly 15 to 20 percent more than a single-decker but carries 40 percent more passengers with the same driver, which is the entire case for the format. Service life is 15 to 18 years of urban duty at around 60,000 km per year; increasingly the diesel drivetrain described here is replaced by a battery-electric equivalent with the same body structure, since the integral two-deck shell is drivetrain-agnostic.
