Rotary Snowplow Train

Product

Overview

A rotary snowplow train clears deep snow from railway track by cutting it with a spinning rotor at the front of the vehicle and throwing it clear of the right of way. It is used when accumulated snow is too deep or too compacted for a wedge or flanger plow to push aside, typically in mountain passes, high-latitude main lines, and yards after heavy storms. A wedge plow only displaces snow to the side; once the cut reaches the height of the plow blade, or the bank is hard, the plow stalls. The rotary instead removes snow vertically by lifting it and ejecting it through a chute, so depth is limited by the rotor diameter rather than by the resistance of the bank.

The vehicle carries a Cutter and Impeller Head mounted on the leading face, a Prime Mover Diesel Engine diesel engine to spin it, a Discharge Chute Assembly to direct the snow, and a Chassis and Running Gear that carries the whole machine on the rail. Older units were steam powered and were always pushed by separate locomotives. Modern units are diesel powered and many are self-propelled at working speed through a Traction Propulsion Drive, though they are still usually moved between work sites under tow because their gearing favors low-speed pushing into snow rather than road running.

Cutter and impeller head

The working element is the Rotor Disc, a heavy steel disc carrying replaceable Cutting Blade segments around its rim and a set of Impeller Vane behind them. As the disc turns, the blades shave the snow bank and feed the loosened snow inward to the Impeller Fan. The impeller acts as a centrifugal fan: it accelerates the snow outward and flings it up the chute. Rotor diameters run 2.5 to 3.5 m, which sets the maximum depth that one pass can cut. Two Gathering Wing panels fold out to widen the intake beyond the rotor circle so the cut is wide enough to clear the loading gauge, and a pair of Side Ice Cutter trim the vertical faces of the bank so the wings do not jam.

The rotor runs on a Cutter Shaft supported by heavy Cutter Bearing Block pillow blocks. Those blocks ride on greased Ball Bearing sets sealed against melt water by Oil Seal. The scroll-shaped Cutter Housing wraps the rotor and channels the thrown snow toward the chute throat. Blades wear quickly in abrasive icy snow and are unbolted and replaced as a routine maintenance item.

Prime mover and transmission

The Diesel Engine supplies all the rotor power. Output is high, between 600 and 2,000 kW, because cutting and throwing dense snow at several thousand tonnes per hour absorbs a great deal of torque. The engine breathes through twin Turbocharger units and a Charge Air Cooler, and a Engine Governor holds rotor speed steady as the load swings between light powder and packed drifts.

Power reaches the rotor through the Rotor Power Transmission. A Driveshaft with Universal Joint joints feeds the Main Rotor Gearbox, a right-angle gearbox that steps engine speed down to rotor speed and turns the drive through ninety degrees onto the cutter shaft. The internal Helical Gear Pair sets sit in a Gearbox Housing casting. A Rotor Clutch lets the operator engage the rotor against a building load rather than starting it loaded, and Shear Pin elements in the driveline fail deliberately if the rotor strikes ballast, a rail joint bar, or other buried debris, protecting the gearbox and engine.

Discharge and chute

Cut snow leaves the impeller through the Chute Barrel. The whole chute sits on a Chute Slew Ring driven by a hydraulic Chute Slew Drive so the operator can aim the stream to either side and avoid throwing snow back onto an adjacent track or over a station platform. A Chute Deflector cap at the top sets the launch angle and so the throw distance, which runs 30 to 60 m. Both motions are set by Chute Cylinder actuators, and a replaceable Chute Liner takes the abrasion of the snow stream so the structural barrel is not eaten away.

Materials and construction

The cutter parts are made of hardened and abrasion-resistant steels because wet, gritty snow is erosive. Blades and liners are wear items, bolted on for quick change. The car body and Underframe are welded steel sized to carry the weight of the engine and gearbox at the front, which makes these vehicles heavy and front-biased. The Bogie sets and Wheelset are standard heavy-rail running gear with Coil Spring suspension and journal Ball Bearing. The operator cab is insulated and heated, since the work happens in storms and at low temperature.

Variants

Single-track-line rotaries are the largest type, sized to clear a full main-line gauge in mountain territory. Self-propelled units add the traction drive and can run short distances under their own power. Pushed units have no traction drive and rely on one or more locomotives behind them, which is the traditional arrangement and still common for the heaviest snow. Some yards use smaller rotary attachments fitted to a locomotive or a road-rail machine rather than a dedicated car. Steam rotaries survive in preserved and excursion service and are run on a handful of heritage railways.

Use and operations

The machine advances slowly into the bank, 2 to 15 km/h depending on snow density, while the rotor turns at 150 to 450 rpm. The operator watches load through the cab instruments and backs off the advance if the engine begins to lug, since over-driving the rotor stalls it and risks shearing the driveline. A locomotive or the onboard traction drive supplies the forward thrust; the rotor itself does not pull the vehicle forward. Crews clear in repeated passes when banks exceed rotor height, taking the top layer first. Routine maintenance centers on blade and liner replacement, gearbox oil checks, and clearing ice from the chute and impeller after each shift so it does not freeze solid before the next call.
