Railway Bogie

Product

Also known as: railway bogie, rail truck, wheelset frame

Overview

A railway bogie, also called a truck, is the pivoting running gear fitted under each end of a rail vehicle. It carries the wheelsets, the suspension, and the brakes, and it steers the vehicle through curves by yawing about a central pivot while the carbody stays roughly straight. A typical passenger coach rides on two bogies, so each one supports about half the vehicle and transmits that weight to the track through four wheels.

The bogie does several jobs at once. It spreads the carbody load across two axles, it filters track irregularities so the ride stays comfortable, it provides the friction braking, and on powered vehicles it houses the traction motor and gearbox. Because the wheelset is rigid and the wheels are coned, the bogie also tends to centre itself on the track and follow curves with limited flange contact.

Frame and bolster

The structural core is the Bogie frame, a welded steel H-frame. Two Side frame members run the length of the bogie and carry the axlebox guides at their ends, and they are tied together by transverse Transom beams that fix the gauge of the frame and resist twisting. Welded Frame gusset plates reinforce the corners against fatigue, and four Lifting lug eyes let the depot crane lift the assembled bogie.

Across the centre sits the Bolster, a transverse beam that takes the carbody weight through the secondary suspension and passes traction and braking loads into the frame. The carbody turns about the Centre pivot, a spherical bearing at the bolster centre, while a Side bearer on each side limits roll and shares the vertical load. This arrangement lets the bogie rotate under the coach as it enters a curve.

Wheelsets and axleboxes

Each bogie carries two Wheelset units. A wheelset is a single forged Axle with two Wheel forgings press-fit onto its seats, so both wheels always turn together. The coned tread and the wheel flange guide the set along the rail and give the self-centring behaviour that keeps the bogie tracking. On the powered axle a Gear wheel is shrunk onto the shaft to receive drive from the gearbox.

At each journal an Axlebox houses the bearing and forms the link to the suspension and the frame. The box runs on sealed roller bearings (the reused ball-bearing units) retained by an Axle end cap and sealed against contamination by oil-seal elements, with a Grease fitting for scheduled relubrication. An Earth brush runs on the axle end to return traction current and keep it out of the bearings, which would otherwise pit under electrical discharge.

Suspension

The suspension works in two stages. The Primary suspension sits between each axlebox and the frame. It uses coil springs together with a Rubber chevron stack that sets the longitudinal and lateral stiffness, so the wheelset can make the small steering movements a curve needs. A Primary damper controls axlebox bounce over rail joints, and an Axlebox guide liner locates the box in the frame jaw.

The Secondary suspension sits between the bolster and the frame and isolates the carbody. A Air spring on each side carries the coach and is inflated through a Levelling valve to hold the floor at a constant height as passengers board. A Bolster spring inside each air spring supports the coach safely if the air spring deflates. A Vertical damper and a Lateral damper control bounce and sway, a Traction rod transmits drive and braking forces while allowing suspension travel, and an Anti-roll bar limits roll in curves without stiffening the vertical ride.

Braking

Braking is by axle-mounted discs. The Brake equipment carries two brake-disc units per axle, each gripped by a Brake caliper that presses brake-pad-set friction pads against both faces. A Brake cylinder converts brake-pipe air pressure into the clamping force, and a Slack adjuster automatically takes up clearance as the pads wear so the cylinder stroke stays in range. A Brake hose feeds each cylinder while letting the bogie move relative to the carbody.

On a powered bogie the Traction package adds a Traction motor hung from the frame on a Motor mount, driving the wheelset through a Pinion and an oil-filled Gearbox, with a Flexible coupling taking up suspension movement. Adhesion aids round out the bogie: a Sandbox drops sand onto the rail when the wheels slip, a Flange lubricator greases the wheel flange to cut curve wear, and a Wheel slide sensor at each axle end feeds the brake and traction control.
