Double-Decker Train

Product

Overview

A double-decker train coach is an unpowered passenger carriage that carries two seating decks within a single loading gauge. By dropping the lower floor close to rail level between the bogies and adding a full upper deck above it, the coach seats roughly 140 passengers in the same length that a single-deck car would use for about 80. The coach has no traction equipment of its own. It is hauled by a separate locomotive or coupled into a powered multiple-unit set, drawing only control and auxiliary power from the trainline. The arrangement suits commuter and regional services where platforms are long enough to load and unload a tall car quickly but where extra capacity per metre of train length is worth more than the faster boarding of a low single-deck design. Typical cars run at 160 to 200 km/h and weigh around 48 tonnes empty, with the higher mass and raised body centre demanding careful suspension and structural design.

The structure starts with the Carbody Shell (two decks), a welded shell that houses the Passenger Interior across both levels. The car rides on two Trailer Bogie trucks and connects to its neighbours through the Couplers & Gangways. Stopping is handled by the Air Brake System, comfort by the Roof HVAC Pack packs, passenger access by the Sliding Plug Door sets, and power and lighting by the Low-Voltage Electrical subsystem. Around 60 grouped Fastener Set kits hold the structure and equipment together.

Carbody and structure

The Carbody Shell (two decks) is the load-bearing core. A welded steel Welded Steel Underframe carries buffing and traction forces end to end, and the dropped Lower Deck Floor Panel sits only about 400 mm above rail height to free vertical room for the Upper Deck Floor Panel mezzanine. Aluminium Sidewall Module modules and a curved Roof Structure braced by Roof Rib members close the body, with End Wall Structure panels at each end. Roughly 48 Double-Glazed Window units, each a Laminated Glazing Unit pane set in a Window Rubber Seal, light both decks. The structural challenge is the upper deck: it raises the centre of gravity, so the sidewalls and floors are sized to keep the body stiff in torsion while the air secondary suspension manages roll in curves.

Interior and access

The Passenger Interior divides into upper and lower saloons. Around 140 Seat Assembly units are split between the two decks, with two Internal Staircase assemblies at the vestibule ends carrying passengers between levels. Each staircase uses a pair of Stair Stringer members, ten Stair Tread steps, and a Handrail on each side. The cabin is finished with Interior Lining Panel wall trim, overhead Overhead Luggage Rack shelves, glass Glass Partition screens between bays, and a Floor Covering covering chosen for wear and slip resistance. A Vacuum Lavatory Module module sits at one end, built around a Toilet Bowl, a Vacuum Discharge Valve for the vacuum discharge system, a Waste Holding Tank, and a Washbasin Unit.

Running gear

Each Trailer Bogie is a two-axle trailer truck. A welded Bogie Frame carries two Wheelset assemblies, each made from an Axle, two Steel Wheel discs, and an Axlebox at each journal that runs on a Ball Bearing pair behind an Oil Seal. The Primary Coil Spring coil springs locate the wheelsets, while a Secondary Air Spring at each side carries the body on a Rubber Air Bellows regulated by a Levelling Valve that holds floor height constant as load changes. A Yaw Damper pair steadies the truck at speed. Because the coach is a trailer, the bogie carries no motor: braking is by the Bogie Brake Rigging rigging, with four Axle-Mounted Brake Disc rotors gripped by Brake Caliper units driven by Brake Cylinder actuators.

Brakes and climate

The Air Brake System follows standard trainline practice. A Brake Distributor Valve valve reads brake-pipe pressure and meters air from the Auxiliary Air Reservoir tanks into the brake cylinders through the Brake Pipe & Hoses and its hoses. Each truck carries a Wheel-Slide Protection Valve that uses a Pressure Sensor and an Microcontroller to release the Dump Valve when a wheel begins to slide. Two Roof HVAC Pack packs, one per deck, sit on the roof. Each runs a Refrigerant Compressor feeding a Evaporator Coil and rejecting heat through a Condenser Coil, with two Supply Air Fan units pushing conditioned air through the Distribution Ductwork. A Heating Element reheat stage handles cold weather. Splitting the climate plant into two packs lets each deck hold its own set temperature, since the upper deck gains more solar heat through its larger glazed area while the lower deck runs cooler near rail level.

Doors and electrical

Lower-deck access is through four Sliding Plug Door sets. Each plug door uses two Door Leaf panels driven by a Door Drive Unit built from a Servo Motor, a Ball Screw, Linear Guide Rail rails, and a Helical Gear Pair, all sequenced by a Door Control Unit for obstruction detection and locking. Power comes from the Low-Voltage Electrical subsystem: a Distribution Box with copper Copper Busbar bars, Relay contactors, and Circuit Breaker protection feeds about 60 LED Light Fixture units and eight Passenger Info Display passenger-information screens, backed by a 12 V Battery bank and two Power Supply converters during trainline dropouts.
