Ballast Tamper Product
Overview
A ballast tamper is a self-propelled maintenance-of-way machine that restores the geometry of a railway track. Over time, traffic packs and scatters the crushed-stone ballast under the sleepers, letting the track settle unevenly. The tamper corrects this in one pass: it lifts and shifts the track panel to the surveyed position, then drives vibrating tines into the ballast on each side of every sleeper and squeezes the stone tight underneath to hold the new position. Because it works while running along the line under its own power, it combines a road-going rail vehicle, a heavy hydraulic plant, and a precision survey instrument in one chassis.
How it works
Everything mounts on the Machine Chassis, a welded box frame with hydrostatic propulsion and couplers for towing in a work train. Power comes from the Diesel Engine, a turbocharged inline-six whose Piston Assembly assemblies and Crankshaft drive both the travel transmission and the Hydraulic Power Pack — a variable-displacement pump, valve block and reservoir that feed every work cylinder on the machine.
The working heart is the pair of Tamping Unit assemblies, one straddling each rail. Each lowers four Tamping Tine tines into the ballast; an Eccentric Shaft vibrates them at roughly 35 Hz while Squeeze Cylinder cylinders close the tines to compact stone under the sleeper. Just ahead, the Lifting & Lining Unit grips the rails with rollers and uses hydraulic cylinders to raise the track and align it sideways before the tines pack it.
How far to lift, line and tamp is decided by the Measuring & Leveling System, which reads a three-point chord and a reference laser to compute the track's error from design geometry, then commands the cylinders through its boards and computer. The machine rolls on Running Axle Bogie travel axles for transit between work sites. The operators work from the Operator Cab, watching the Touch Digitizer control panel and displays as the units do their work, with a 12 V Battery supplying starting and control power.
