Ballast Regulator

Product

Overview

A ballast regulator is a self-propelled track maintenance machine that shapes, redistributes, and sweeps the crushed stone ballast that supports railway track. After tamping, renewal, or ballast unloading from hopper wagons, the stone is left uneven: too high in some cribs, piled on the sleeper ends, and scattered across the rail seats and fastenings. The regulator moves along the track at 1 to 8 km/h, plowing surplus ballast from where it is not wanted into the cribs and shoulders where it carries load, then sweeping the sleeper tops clean. A well-shaped ballast profile holds the track in line and level, drains water away from the sleepers, and resists lateral movement under traffic.

The machine carries three groups of work tools: a Front Center Plow mounted ahead of the front axle, a pair of Shoulder Wing Plows on the sides, and a Rotary Broom at the rear. An operator in the Operator Cab sets each tool from a joystick console while the machine runs under its own power. Typical builders include Plasser & Theurer, Harsco (Loram), and Matisa, and the design has changed little in principle over decades because the job itself is mechanically simple.

Hydraulic system

Nearly every working motion on the machine is hydraulic. The Diesel Engine drives a power take-off gearbox that turns the Main Hydraulic Pump, a tandem gear pump feeding the open-loop work circuit at 200 to 350 bar. Flow reaches each cylinder and motor through a Valve Bank of proportional sections, so the operator can feather a plow blade down by millimetres or swing a wing out at full speed. A Hydraulic Reservoir of about 250 litres supplies the pump, and an Hydraulic Oil Cooler with a return filter keeps the oil clean and below its temperature limit during long shifts. An Accumulator absorbs the load spikes that occur when a plow blade hits a dense pile of stone, protecting the hoses and smoothing the operator's control.

Propulsion is separate from the work circuit. A closed-loop hydrostatic drive uses a variable displacement Drive Pump feeding wheel motors on the axles, which gives stepless speed control in both directions and lets the machine creep at working speed or run light at transit speed without changing gear.

Plow and broom assemblies

The front center plow spreads ballast across the track. Its Center Plow Blade and hinged gate blades open and close to direct stone left, right, or into the center, and bolt-on wear plates take the abrasion so the structure lasts. The wing plows reach out beyond the sleeper ends to build and trim the ballast shoulder; extend cylinders set how far they reach and tilt cylinders set the shoulder slope, usually around 1 in 1.5.

The rotary broom at the rear finishes the job. A Broom Core carrying 24 brush segments of polypropylene and steel wire spins at 350 to 650 rpm, driven by a hydraulic Broom Motor through a right-angle gearbox. It sweeps loose stone off the sleeper tops and rail fastenings and throws it back into the cribs, leaving a clean surface ready for traffic. A guard contains the flung ballast so it does not damage trackside equipment.

Drive and running gear

The machine rides on two axles with forged steel Rail Wheel sets of 730 mm diameter, sprung on coil springs over the axle boxes. The front axle is driven through a final drive gear set, and roller Ball Bearing sets carry the axle loads. Braking is by an air system with tread brake blocks at each wheel plus a spring-applied parking brake, so the machine can stop itself on a grade and hold position while parked. Screw couplers at each end let it be towed in a work train.

Materials and construction

The main frame is welded box-section steel sized for the bending loads the plows feed back into it. Plow blades and wear plates are hardened or abrasion-resistant steel because ballast is granite or basalt and wears mild steel quickly. Cylinders are chrome-plated rod with replaceable seals, and the brush segments and wear plates are treated as consumables changed on a maintenance schedule rather than repaired.

Variants

Smaller two-axle regulators handle branch lines and yards, while larger units add a separate ballast hopper, a snow plow attachment for winter clearance, or a second broom. Gauge options cover 1,435 mm standard, 1,520 mm, and 1,000 mm metre gauge. Some machines combine regulating with a sweeper-only mode for platform and crossing work.

Use and operations

A regulator usually follows a tamper in a maintenance convoy. It travels to site at up to 80 km/h on its own wheels, then drops its tools and works the section at 1 to 8 km/h. One operator can run the whole machine, setting plow positions for the ballast profile required and lifting all tools clear for transit between work sites. Maintenance centers on the wear items: brush segments, plow wear plates, hydraulic filters, and cylinder seals, all of which are designed for quick field replacement.
