Container Flatcar (Well Car) Product

Overview

A container flatcar, or well car, is the workhorse of intermodal freight: an unpowered wagon designed to carry ISO shipping containers between ports, terminals, and inland depots. The defining feature is the depressed central well. By dropping the container floor close to rail level, the wagon can stack one container on top of another and still stay within the loading gauge, roughly doubling the payload per unit of train length compared with a flat deck.

The wagon has no engine and no cab; it is a structure on wheels, coupled into a train and braked from the locomotive. Everything in its design serves load carrying, secure stacking, and reliable braking. It rides on two Freight Bogie (Three-Piece Truck) trucks and connects to the rest of the train through the Coupler, Draft Gear & Buffer at each end.

How it works

The Well Underframe Structure is a welded steel underframe with a Center Sill running its length and a depressed Well Floor Structure between the trucks. Vertical loads pass through two Body Bolster members into the bogies, while buffing and draft forces travel along the center sill into the Automatic Coupler and its cushioning Draft Gear Cushioning Unit. Each Freight Bogie (Three-Piece Truck) is a three-piece freight truck: two side frames and a bolster on a Coil Spring nest, carrying two Wheelset units on Axlebox Bearing cartridges, braked through a Brake Disc (rotor) on each axle.

Containers are held by the Container Securement system. Pedestals locate the bottom container in the well, while Inter-Box Connector Lock inter-box connectors and Twist Lock fittings lock a second container on top for double-stack service. Braking is pneumatic: the Air Brake System system uses a control valve and reservoirs charged from the train brake pipe to apply the Brake Cylinder units through rigging, and a Hand Brake holds the wagon when it stands uncoupled. End End Platform give crews safe access along the car.
