Gondola Wagon Product
Overview
A gondola is an open-top freight wagon with high steel sides and ends and no roof, built to carry heavy bulk and dense cargo. Coal, iron ore, scrap metal, aggregate, and steel products all ride in gondolas because they can be loaded from above by grab, conveyor, or chute, withstand rough handling, and tolerate exposure to weather. The body is essentially a strong steel box on wheels: simple, robust, and cheap to maintain relative to the loads it carries.
Like all freight wagons it is unpowered and unattended in service, coupled into a train and braked from the locomotive. The design priorities are structural strength under heavy, sometimes uneven loading, and reliable braking. The wagon rides on two Freight Bogie (Three-Piece Truck) trucks and connects to the train through the Coupler, Draft Gear & Buffer at each end.
How it works
The load is carried by the Steel Body: a welded steel Steel Floor, two Side Wall panels stiffened by stake posts, and two End Wall panels, all built up on a Center Sill. Vertical load passes through two Body Bolster members into the trucks, while coupling forces run along the center sill into the Automatic Coupler and its Draft Gear Cushioning Unit. Each Freight Bogie (Three-Piece Truck) is a three-piece freight truck: side frames and a bolster on a Coil Spring nest carrying two Wheelset units on Axlebox Bearing cartridges, braked through a Brake Disc (rotor) on each axle.
Many gondolas discharge through the floor: the Bottom Drop Doors assembly hangs hinged door panels that swing open over a pit or hopper to dump the lading, then latch shut for the next load. Braking is pneumatic — the Air Brake System system applies the Brake Cylinder units from the train brake pipe, and a Hand Brake secures the wagon when it stands uncoupled. Along the sides, Stake Pockets & Tie-Downs provide anchor points for securing banded or oversized loads.
