Cartoning Machine
ProductOverview
A cartoning machine is a primary packaging system that forms flat carton blanks into 3D boxes, loads products into the erected cartons, seals them with adhesive, and discharges the finished packages. It is a staple of pharmaceutical, confectionery, cosmetic, and consumer goods manufacturing.
The machine works intermittently: each cycle (typically 0.5–2 seconds at production speeds of 30–120 cartons per minute) indexes through a series of stations, erector, loader, and closer, each performing one operation. A common main drive shaft driven by a gearmotor carries cams that synchronise all stations through mechanical followers. Optional servo axes and real-time vision enable fast changeover and high-mix production.
Hot-melt adhesive (kept at 165–190 °C) seals the bottom and top flaps. The machine integrates safety interlocks, emergency stops, and PLC control to meet pharmaceutical and food safety standards.
How it works
The Carton Magazine holds a stack of flat carton blanks fed one at a time via a Separator Blade into the Carton Erector. The cartoning-machine-main-drive, driven by the Main Motor and stepped down through the Main Gearbox, rotates a Main Shaft carrying Cam Followers that trigger each station.
At the erector station, the Erector Tooling and Erector Finger fold the blanks into a 3D box shape. The Glue Applicator applies hot-melt adhesive to the bottom flaps as they fold. The Erector Drive precisely times the folding motion.
The erected cartons are indexed onto the Infeed Conveyor, which feeds products (e.g., tablets, chocolates, tubes) to the Loading Station. The Loader Gripper, driven by the Loader Servo on a Loader Arm, picks the product and inserts it into the carton. Vision from the Loader Vision confirms carton position and product presence.
Next, the carton indexes to the Closing Unit, where the Closer Tooling folds the top flaps and the Closer Glue Head applies adhesive for sealing. The Closer Clamp holds the carton under pressure while the glue sets (2–5 seconds), then releases onto the Discharge Conveyor.
The main mechanical system is synchronised by the Drive System, with the Control System providing speed, product-count, and fault diagnostics via the HMI Panel. The Safety Module enforces the E-Stop Button and Gate Interlocks to protect operators.
The Lubrication System, comprising the Lube Pump, Lube Filter, and Lube Manifold, maintains oil circulation through the Main Gearbox and cam journals to prevent wear.
Production and changeover
Line speeds range from 30 to 120 cartons per minute, depending on the carton format, product size, and adhesive cure time. Format changeover requires swap of the Erector Tooling and Closer Tooling, typically taking 15–45 minutes for experienced technicians. Electronic templates can reduce this time by storing tooling offsets and servo positions in the HMI Panel.
Optional vision-guided loading and servo erector drives allow mixed-product runs, where the machine automatically adjusts to different carton sizes within a family on a cycle-by-cycle basis, unlocking higher flexibility for contract packers and small-batch producers.
