VFFS Machine Product

Overview

A vertical form-fill-seal (VFFS) machine is a high-speed packaging system that converts a reel of flat film into individual pouches, fills each with product, and seals it in one integrated process. VFFS machines are widely used in the snack, spice, powder, and granule industries, offering flexibility for format changes and high output (30–300 pouches/min depending on geometry).

The process is fully integrated: film unwinds from a reel, forms into a vertical tube around a product stream, heat seals the longitudinal seam, then the horizontal jaws seal the bottom of one pouch and the top of the next, all in continuous or intermittent motion.

How it works

The Film Unwind Station supplies film at constant tension controlled by the Film Brake. The film is straightened by the Film Straightener and fed into the Forming Tube.

Inside the forming tube, the Tube Mandrel is a tapered former around which the film collapses. The Collating Collar (collating collar) guides the film, and the Tube Collapse Roller pair presses the film edges together to create a longitudinal seam. A vertical seal is often pre-applied by the Vertical Sealing Jaw before the product is inserted.

The Dosing System meters product into the tube. The Dosing Hopper gravity-feeds the Metering Screw, which is driven by the Dosing Motor. The Product Gate releases a controlled amount on each cycle. Product weight is measured by the Pressure Sensor below the metering screw.

The filled tube indexes downward continuously. The Drive System—powered by the Main Motor, reduced through the Main Gearbox—drives a Main Shaft carrying Cam Followers. These cams operate the Sealing Jaws.

The Horizontal Sealing Jaw compresses top and bottom, sealing the pouch boundaries between product fills. The Vertical Sealing Jaw seals the longitudinal seam if required. Heat is provided by Jaw Heating Element (nichrome wire or ceramic), regulated by the Temperature Control system. The Temperature Sensors monitor jaw temperature, and the Temperature Controller applies proportional power via Heater Contactors.

After sealing, the Cutting Station severs the film via the Cutter Blade, dropping the finished pouch and readying the tube for the next cycle.

The Control System orchestrates all operations via the Control Cabinet PLC. The HMI Panel allows operators to select pouch-size recipes, adjust fill weight, and monitor production counts. The Safety Module enforces the E-Stop Button for safe operation.

Product and format flexibility

VFFS machines excel at high-mix production. Recipe libraries store pouch width, length, fill weight, and seal temperatures. Changeover typically takes 5–10 minutes by uploading a recipe and adjusting the forming tube to the new width (often via a quick-change mandrel). This makes VFFS ideal for contract packers serving many customers.

Common film laminates (polyester/PE, PP, nylon/LLDPE, kraft/PE) are supported. Barrier films for oxygen-sensitive products (spices, tea, flour) are standard; stand-up pouches (SUP) with gussets or zipper headers require optional tooling but are achievable on modern VFFS platforms.
