Pad Printing Machine
ProductOverview
A pad printing machine prints onto curved, recessed, and textured surfaces that a flat process cannot reach. It works by indirect transfer: ink is held in the etched recess of a printing plate, lifted out by a soft silicone pad, and laid down on the part. Because the pad deforms around the workpiece, pad printing marks pens, keyboard caps, golf balls, medical devices, toys, and electronic housings where the surface is anything but flat. The deposited film is thin and the detail is fine, which suits small logos, scales, and legends rather than large solid areas.
The machine holds a few subsystems in fixed alignment on the Frame and Base. The Cliche Plate Holder holds the etched plate, the Sealed Ink Cup System floods and wipes it, the Pad and Pad Head carries the silicone pad, the Part Fixture and Shuttle presents the part, and a Pneumatic Drive System system driven by the Control System sequences the strokes.
The cliche plate and registration
The image lives on the Cliche Plate, a steel or photopolymer plate etched 18 to 25 microns deep in the shape of the artwork. A Plate Clamp holds it flat on the Cliche Base, and two Registration Adjuster screws shift it so the print lands exactly where it should on the part, within about 0.05 mm. Etch depth sets how much ink the recess holds and therefore the density of the print, so it is matched to the ink and the substrate. Steel plates last for long runs; photopolymer plates are cheaper and faster to make for short runs and prototypes.
Sealed ink cup and doctoring
The Sealed Ink Cup System both inks the image and cleans the plate in one motion. A Ink Cup sits upside down over the plate, holding solvent ink sealed from the air so it does not dry or skin. Around its rim is a Doctoring Ring, a hard ceramic or tungsten ring that scrapes the plate surface clean as the cup slides, leaving ink only in the etched recess. The Cup Carriage driven by the Cup Cylinder runs the cup across the plate on a Linear Guide Rail between strokes, and a Ink Stirrer keeps the ink mixed and at the right viscosity. The sealed cup is what made modern pad printing clean and repeatable, since it replaced open ink trays that let solvent flash off and shifted color through the run.
The pad and transfer cycle
The print itself is the work of the Silicone Pad, a soft silicone pad chosen by shape and durometer. The Pad Cylinder strokes it down onto the inked plate, where it picks up the ink film. As the pad lifts and the cup wipes the plate again, the pad rolls slightly so the solvent at the ink surface tacks up, which helps the ink release cleanly later. The pad then strokes down onto the part in the Part Fixture and Shuttle and deposits the ink. The pad shape matters: a sharp pad rolls air out from the center to the edge so no bubbles trap under the ink. The pad rides the Pad Mounting Plate and stays square on Guide Rod rods and a Linear Guide Rail, with O-Ring Set seals in the cylinder.
Part fixture and shuttle
Each part is held in a Workpiece Jig, a custom nest cut to the shape of the workpiece so it sits in the same place every cycle. Two Locator Pin features register it. The jig rides a Shuttle Table on Linear Guide Rail rails, driven by the Shuttle Cylinder, which carries the part out to the operator for loading and back under the pad to print. The shuttle is what lets one operator load and unload while the previous part is being printed, which sets the cycle rate near 900 to 1800 parts an hour.
Materials, force, and control
Silicone pads run from about 1 to 12 Shore A; a soft pad conforms to a deeply curved part, a firmer pad holds fine detail on a near-flat one. Pad force is set by a Force Regulator in the Pneumatic Drive System system and read by a Pressure Sensor, since too little force breaks the image and too much smears it. Inks are solvent or two-part systems matched to the substrate, whether ABS, polycarbonate, anodized metal, or glass, often with a primer or flame treatment first. The Control System runs the cycle through a PLC and a Operator HMI, with a Part Sensor confirming a part is present before the pad strokes and a E-stop Button for safety.
Variants and use
A single-color machine like this one prints one image per cycle. A multi-color rotary machine indexes the part around a table past several cliche and pad stations so it takes several colors in registration in one pass. Larger machines add servo pad drives in place of the Pad Cylinder for programmable force and dwell. All share the etched plate, sealed cup, silicone pad, and shuttle. Pad printing remains the standard way to mark small logos and legends onto shaped industrial parts that no flat press can touch, across electronics, medical, automotive, and promotional goods.
