Case Labeling Machine

Product

Overview

A case labeling machine prints a shipping label on demand and applies it to a corrugated case as the case moves down a conveyor. It replaces hand-applied preprinted labels in shipping and distribution, where each case may carry a different barcode, weight, lot, or destination. The machine images a fresh label from data sent over the network, peels it from its liner, and presses it onto the case panel within a fraction of a second, fast enough to keep up with a packing line running 20 to 40 cases a minute.

The work splits across eight subsystems. The Stand and Column holds everything over the line, the Print Engine images the label, the Label Handling feeds media at steady tension, the Tamp-Blow Applicator places the label, the Case Conveyor moves the case and times the cycle, the Air System supplies vacuum and air, the Control System sequences the whole operation, and the Verification reads each label back to catch failures.

Printing the label

The Print Engine uses thermal transfer, which melts ink from a ribbon onto the label facestock. The Thermal Printhead carries a line of Heating Element dots on a ceramic Head Substrate; the Head Driver Board switches each dot on and off to form text and barcodes, and the Head Heatsink sheds heat between labels. The Platen Roller, turned by the Platen Stepper, presses the label against the head and advances the web one label at a time. A Gap Sensor finds the gap between labels so each one stops precisely under the dot line.

Ribbon runs from the Ribbon Supply Spindle across the printhead to the Ribbon Rewind Spindle, which the Ribbon Rewind Motor keeps taut so the ink lays down without wrinkles. The Peel Bar bends the liner back sharply at the engine exit, so the stiff printed label separates from the flexible liner and stands clear for the pad to grab. When media or ribbon needs loading, the Head Lift Cam raises the head off the platen.

Feeding the media

The Label Handling subsystem keeps the web moving at constant tension regardless of roll size. Labels pay off the Unwind Reel, whose Unwind Brake stops the roll from coasting when the web halts. A spring-loaded Dancer Arm absorbs the start-stop motion, since a full roll has far more inertia than a nearly empty one and would otherwise snatch the web. Idler Roller rollers and Edge Guide edge guides route the web straight to the print engine, all turning on Ball Bearing bearings. After labels peel off, the empty liner winds onto the Liner Rewind Reel driven by the Liner Rewind Motor. A Low-Label Sensor warns the operator before the supply runs out.

Applying the label

The Tamp-Blow Applicator is a tamp-blow head. As the peel bar presents each label, the Tamp Pad grips it by suction drawn through a Vacuum Grid that spreads the hold across the whole label. The Tamp Cylinder then drives the pad down toward the case along a Linear Guide Rail rail, and just before contact the Blow Manifold releases an air burst that pushes the label off the pad onto the panel, so the pad never has to strike the case hard. Cushion Stop stops soften the end of the stroke, and a Home Sensor confirms the pad is clear before the next label prints. For two-panel work, a hinged Corner-Wrap Pad wraps the trailing edge of the label around the case corner onto the adjacent panel.

Moving and timing the case

The Case Conveyor carries cases past the applicator on a Conveyor Belt over a slider Conveyor Bed. The Conveyor Gearmotor, built from a Servo Motor and a Gearbox Housing with a Helical Gear Pair reduction, turns the Drive Roller while the Idler Pulley tensions the belt. Side Rail rails align each case to the labeled panel. A Product Photoeye photoeye detects the leading edge of a case and starts the cycle, while the Conveyor Encoder tracks belt travel so the label fires at the right spot on a moving case. A Spacing Gate sets the gap between cases when product arrives bunched.

Air, control, and verification

The Air System makes pad suction with a Vacuum Generator that needs no pump, sets working pressure through a Filter-Regulator, and routes air to each device through a Valve Manifold. A Vacuum Sensor confirms the pad gripped a label before the tamp fires, and a Pressure Sensor watches supply pressure.

The Control System ties it together. The Controller Board, built around an Microcontroller, renders the label and runs the print-then-apply sequence, while the I/O Board reads the sensors and switches the valves. The operator works through the Operator HMI touchscreen to pick a format and enter data, and a Stack Light shows line state. After application, the Verification scanner reads the barcode under its Illumination Bar bar; any case whose code fails to decode is pushed off by the Reject Pusher so a bad label never leaves the line.
