Gantry Palletizer Product

Overview

A gantry palletizer is a high-speed robotic system that stacks cases, cartons, or bundles onto pallets in a repeating pattern. It uses three independent servo-driven axes (X, Y, Z) to move a gripper across a large working envelope, picking cases from an infeed conveyor and placing them in precise positions on the pallet.

Gantry palletizers are widely deployed in beverage, food, pharmaceutical, and logistics operations where high throughput (400–800 cases/hour), reliability, and flexible stacking patterns are required. They are more rigid and precise than articulated robots and work well for heavy cases or when the working envelope is rectilinear and predictable.

How it works

The Infeed Conveyor, driven by the Infeed Motor, continuously feeds cases into the work zone. The Infeed Buffer temporarily stores cases if the gripper is busy.

The Pallet Magazine holds empty pallets, maintained by the Pallet Dispenser. The Dispenser Servo pushes one pallet at a time into the stacking area when the Pallet Sensor confirms its position.

The Main Gantry Structure provides a rigid lattice frame. The X-Axis Assembly spans the width of the pallet, driven by the X Servo Motor through the X Ballscrew. The X Encoder provides real-time position feedback.

Mounted on the X-Carriage is the Y-Axis Assembly, which moves the gripper in depth via the Y Servo Motor and Y Ballscrew. The Y Encoder confirms Y position.

The Z-Axis Assembly is attached to the Y-Carriage. The Z Servo Motor raises and lowers the Gripper or Layer Head through the Z Ballscrew. The Z Encoder tracks Z height.

At the end effector, the Gripper or Layer Head comprises a Gripper Frame holding a Suction Cup Array of typically 4–16 vacuum cups. The Cup Manifold distributes vacuum from a central pump (not shown) to all cups. The Vacuum Valve is a proportional solenoid that engages vacuum when the gripper is positioned over a case. The Gripper Sensors (pressure or load cell) confirm that the case is securely held before the gripper moves.

The Control System runs a real-time PLC in the Control Cabinet. The PLC receives case-ready signals from the Infeed Buffer and coordinates:

  1. Move X, Y to the infeed buffer position
  2. Lower Z to pick height
  3. Engage Vacuum Valve and confirm grip
  4. Move X, Y, Z to the target position on the pallet
  5. Retract Z slightly and disengage vacuum to drop the case
  6. Return to home position

The HMI Panel displays stacking patterns (single-layer, double-layer, block patterns) stored as recipes. Operators can select a pattern, and the PLC calculates all (X, Y, Z) positions for each layer, adjusting for pallet height as it grows.

The Vision System (optional) uses an CMOS Image Sensor mounted on the gripper to detect case position and orientation, allowing automatic rotation or alignment before placing.

Safety is enforced by the Safety Module: the E-Stop Button stops all motion, and the Safety Fence encloses the stacking zone, with interlocked gates preventing entry during operation.

Once the pallet is fully stacked, the Outfeed Conveyor, driven by the Outfeed Motor, removes it and indexes an empty pallet from the magazine.

Pallet patterns and changeover

The system supports configurable layer patterns:

  • Block stacking: Full-layer blocks for maximum stability.
  • Row stacking: Offset rows for interlocking strength.
  • Single-layer patterns: One case per layer for delicate products.

Pattern recipes are stored on the HMI Panel and can be loaded in seconds. Changing from one pallet size to another requires only software adjustment; no mechanical tooling swap is needed, making gantry palletizers highly flexible for high-mix production.
