Ream Wrapping Machine

Product

Overview

A ream wrapping machine takes loose stacks of cut paper and turns them into the sealed, labelled reams that ship to print shops and offices. It sits at the dry end of a sheeting line, downstream of the rotary cutter that slices a parent roll into sheets. The job has two halves that must stay exact: count the right number of sheets into each ream, then wrap and seal that stack tightly enough to survive handling. A standard ream is 500 sheets, but the Infeed & Counter counter is recipe-driven, so the same machine runs 100-sheet pads or 250-sheet packs without mechanical change.

How it works

Cut sheets arrive on the Infeed Belt and pass under an Optical Sheet Counter, an optical head that reads individual sheet edges as the stack moves. When the count reaches the recipe target the Batch Gate drops a thin blade between sheet layers to split that ream from the sheets still coming, so counting never has to stop the upstream cutter. The separated stack moves to the Squaring Jogger, where a vibrating table and two pneumatic Side Tamper plates square every edge flush against an adjustable Back Stop. Square edges matter: a stack that is even a few millimetres out will wrap with loose corners that tear in transit.

The squared ream is driven into the Wrap Station by a servo Pusher Carriage. There a roll of kraft or film pays off the Material Unwind, held at constant tension by a dancer arm so the web does not stretch or snap as the roll diameter shrinks. A rotary Cut-off Knife shears a blank to length, and the Folder closes its fold plates and tucking fingers around the ream to form an envelope with overlapping seams. The pusher then carries the wrapped stack into the Heat-Seal Unit unit, where heated Seal Bar shoes and end sealers fuse the overlaps. Each bar runs closed-loop on a thermocouple and carries a Thermal Fuse so a stuck heater cannot scorch the paper.

The seal and the label

The seal is what holds the ream together, and getting it right is mostly a question of temperature and dwell. Polyethylene film fuses cleanly at 130 to 150 °C; kraft paper relies on a glue line or a coated heat-seal layer and runs hotter. A Pressure Sensor confirms the bar reached the ream so a missed seal is flagged rather than shipped. Once sealed, the ream passes the Labelling Head. A direct-thermal Thermal Print Engine images the label on demand with grade, basis weight, sheet size, and count, and a tamp-blow Tamp Applicator lifts the printed label on a vacuum pad and places it on the wrap face. Printing on demand means a grade or size change is a recipe edit, not a label reorder.

Materials and construction

The wear surfaces are chosen for paper contact. Fold plates and the pusher face are anodised aluminium so they slide without marking the wrap. Seal shoes are PTFE-coated to release the heated film and resist build-up. The rotary knife blade is hardened tool steel shearing against a backing Anvil Roller, reground rather than replaced when it dulls. Belt rollers are crowned steel that keeps the flat belt tracking centred. The whole machine sits on a welded steel Base Weldment with leveling feet, because counting and folding both depend on stations holding a common datum. Guard panels are interlocked sheet metal; opening one drops a safety relay in the Control Cabinet cabinet and stops motion.

Control and variants

A PLC in the Control Cabinet cabinet sequences the whole cycle: it tracks the count, fires the gate, times the folds against the pusher position, and holds the seal temperature. The operator works from an HMI Touchscreen touchscreen that stores recipes for each paper grade and ream size. Servo axes on the infeed, unwind, cut-off, and fold give the timing precision that lets the machine run above thirty reams a minute without a sheet count drifting.

Machines vary mostly by speed and wrap material. Office-paper lines run film for a glossy retail look and favour speed; industrial and printing-grade reams use kraft for stiffness and stack better on a pallet. Higher-output versions add a second wrap lane or an inline Discharge Conveyor that feeds a downstream carton packer, so wrapped reams go straight into the shipping case without a manual transfer. Smaller jobbing machines drop the labeller and apply a pre-printed wrap instead.

Use and maintenance

In service the machine runs nearly unattended, with an operator loading wrap and label rolls and clearing the rare jam. The counter optics need wiping clean of paper dust, the seal shoes need their PTFE checked for build-up, and the knife is reground on a schedule tied to throughput. Because the counter is optical rather than mechanical, count accuracy holds across paper weights without recalibration, which is the property that makes the reams trustworthy enough to sell by the count printed on the Labelling Head label.
