Wrap-Around Labeling Machine

Product

Overview

A wrap-around labeling machine takes a printed label off a reel and wraps it the whole way around a cylindrical container, joining the two ends in a thin overlap seam. It suits bottles, cans, jars, and tubes where the label covers most or all of the circumference, which is the common case for water, beverages, household chemicals, and many food jars. The machine works in a continuous stream: bottles arrive bunched on a conveyor, get separated to a fixed spacing, are rolled while a glued label is fed against them, and leave with the label seated and smoothed. A well-tuned line runs a few hundred containers a minute with the seam landing in the same spot on every one.

The container path runs along the Frame and Conveyor, which carries the conveyor and every station at a fixed pitch. The Infeed and Spacing spaces the containers, the Rolling Station turns each one, the Label Dispensing Station feeds the label, the Cold-Glue System lays adhesive on the label edges, and the Wrap and Press Belt folds the overlap down. The Drive and Control keeps all of these synchronized to one master line position, and the Electrical Cabinet powers the drives.

Spacing the containers

Containers reach the machine touching one another, and they must be split apart before labeling. The Infeed and Spacing does this with a Timing Screw, a rotating screw whose pitch widens along its length so that bottles entering its grooves come out evenly separated. A Infeed Starwheel then hands each spaced bottle into the rolling station at the right instant. The screw runs on its own Servo Motor through a backlash-free Servo Coupling, and a Presence Sensor tells the controller when a bottle is present so a missing container does not waste a label.

Rolling the container

A wrap-around label can only seat evenly if the container rotates exactly once as the label is laid on. The Rolling Station station does this by running each container between a fixed Rolling Plate below and a moving Pressure Belt above. The belt runs slightly faster than the container moves forward, so the bottle spins as it rolls along. Coil Spring pressure keeps the belt firmly on the bottle regardless of small diameter differences, and the belt rides on crowned Belt Pulley wheels with a Belt Tensioner holding it taut. The rolling speed is matched to the label feed so the label arrives at the bottle surface with no slip.

Feeding and gluing the label

The Label Dispensing Station unwinds labels from a reel on the Reel Hub and feeds them past a sharp Peel Beak that lifts the label tip free of its backing. The Drive Roller pulls exactly one label length per cycle, a Web Dancer keeps the web tension steady, and the spent backing winds onto the Rewind Hub. A Gap Sensor finds the gap between labels so the feed registers to the printed artwork. Cold adhesive comes from the Cold-Glue System system: a Glue Pump feeds the Glue Roller, a Doctor Blade meters the film, and Glue Segment pads stamp glue onto the leading and trailing edges of the label so only the seam and the pickup edge are bonded.

Closing and smoothing the seam

Once the body of the label is wrapped, the trailing edge still stands free and must be pressed onto the wet glue of the leading edge. The Wrap and Press Belt handles this with a soft Wipe Brush that lays the trailing edge down, a sprung Press Pad that seats the overlap flat, and a Sponge Roller that smooths the whole wrap and chases out trapped air. A clean overlap with no bubbles is the mark of a good machine, since a lifting seam looks defective and can catch in downstream handling.

Control and changeover

Everything is timed to a single line position. The Drive and Control uses a Main Gearmotor and a Gearbox Housing to set conveyor speed, a Line Encoder to give every servo a common reference, and a Motion Controller that runs the cam profiles linking screw, web, and conveyor. The operator works through the Touchscreen HMI, picking a stored recipe for each container size. The Electrical Cabinet cabinet holds the Power Supply, the Servo Drive Module amplifiers, and the Emergency Stop circuit. Changeover to a new diameter means swapping the Timing Screw and Infeed Starwheel and adjusting the Guide Rail spacing, work that good designs make tool-free so a line can switch products in minutes.

Use and variants

Wrap-around labelers dominate high-speed round-container lines because a single full-wrap label is cheaper to print and apply than two separate front and back labels, and the seam can be tucked at the back where it is unseen. Cold-glue machines like this one apply paper labels economically; pressure-sensitive versions skip the glue and use self-adhesive labels for cleaner changeovers and clear film looks. Faster lines add multiple Label Dispensing Station heads, and hot-melt versions trade the cold Cold-Glue System for a quick-setting adhesive that lets the machine run faster on light containers. Compared to a Front-and-Back Labeler the wrap-around machine is simpler and faster but limited to round shapes, since flat-sided containers cannot be rolled.
