Overview

A rotary labeling machine (or rotary labeler) is a high-speed container-labeling system that applies self-adhesive, wet-glue, or sleeve labels to round bottles, jars, and cans. It uses a rotating carousel with multiple labeling stations, each applying a different label position or type in sequence. Rotary labelers are commonly deployed in beverage, cosmetic, pharmaceutical, and food industries.

Modern machines can handle 40–500 containers per minute, depending on container size, label complexity, and the number of active stations. Many offer optional vision-guided registration for accurate label placement on variable-height containers.

How it works

Containers arrive on the Infeed Conveyor, driven by the Infeed Motor. Side guides Infeed Guide keep containers centered, and the Infeed Sensor detects container arrival.

The container is indexed onto the Main Turret by the first Container Starwheel. The Starwheel Motor friction-drives the container to rotate it during label application. The Container Position Sensor confirms the container position (typically reading a registration mark or height).

The turret is driven by the Drive System: the Main Motor and Main Gearbox rotate the Main Turret Drive Shaft, which carries the Main Turret. The turret rotates intermittently, stopping at each station to allow labeling operations.

At each labeling station, different label methods apply:

Pressure-Sensitive Labeling: The Pressure-Sensitive Labeling Station uses the Label Unwind Reel (holding labels on a backing tape). The Label/Backing Separator peels the label from its backing just in time. The Label Applicator Arm arm (driven by the Peel-Applicator Servo) positions the peeled label and the Pressure Application Roller presses it firmly onto the rotating container. The Backing-Tape Winder rewinds the waste backing tape via the Backing Motor.

Wet-Glue Labeling (optional): The Wet-Glue Labeling Station applies adhesive via the Wet-Glue Pump, and the Glue Application Roller presses the wetted label onto the container while it rotates.

Sleeve Labeling (optional): The Sleeve Labeling Station uses the Sleeve Dispenser to dispense heat-shrink sleeves. The Sleeve Applicator slides the sleeve onto the container, and the Sleeve Shrink Module applies hot air via the Shrink Blower to shrink the sleeve tightly.

After all labeling stations are complete, the labeled container is indexed onto the Discharge Conveyor, driven by the Discharge Motor, for collection or further processing.

Optional Vision System (smart camera with CMOS Image Sensor) verifies label position and presence, feeding data back to the Control System. This allows real-time adjustment for variable container heights (e.g., bottles with different fill levels).

The Control Cabinet PLC sequences all station operations and turret indexing via the HMI Panel. Operators select container and label-size recipes, set starwheel speed, and enable/disable specific stations. The Safety Module enforces the E-Stop Button and guards to prevent operator contact with moving turrets and starwheels.

Flexibility and changeover

Rotary labelers excel at high-speed, high-volume runs of the same product. Changeover to a different container or label size typically requires:

• Swapping the starwheel for a matching container diameter
• Adjusting label-unwind tension and applicator height
• Loading a new recipe on the HMI Panel

Changeover time is typically 10–20 minutes for experienced technicians. Multi-station capability (1–6 stations) allows applying front labels, back labels, neck labels, or different languages on the same container in one pass.

Speed ranges from 40 to 500 containers/minute depending on container geometry, label area, and station complexity. Accuracy is typically ±2 mm in label position and ±5° in rotation, suitable for most consumer products. Premium pharma and cosmetics applications may use vision feedback to achieve even tighter tolerances.
