Front-and-Back Labeler

Product

Overview

A front-and-back labeler applies two separate labels to a container, one on the front face and one on the back, in a single pass. It is the standard choice when a product carries distinct front artwork and a back label of ingredients, barcodes, or regulatory text, which describes most cosmetics, sauces, spirits, and household goods. Unlike a wrap-around machine that rolls a single label all the way around, this machine holds the container still and presses a precut self-adhesive label on each side from opposed heads. That lets it label flat and oval bottles that cannot be rolled, and it keeps the two labels at a fixed relationship to each other so the front and back artwork line up.

Containers travel along the Frame and Conveyor on a belt while two side belts grip them so they cannot turn. The Infeed Timing spaces them, an optional Orientation Station station turns each one to a known angle, the Front Label Head and Back Label Head apply the two labels, and the Wipe and Press Station smooths both flat. The Drive and Control synchronizes the heads to container position and the Electrical Cabinet powers the drives.

Holding and spacing containers

A two-side application only works if the container does not rotate between the two heads, so the Frame and Conveyor carries the bottle between a pair of Side Hold Belt strips that grip it firmly while it moves through the label zone. Before that, the Infeed Timing separates the incoming stream with a variable-pitch Timing Screw and a Spacing Gate that releases one container at a time. A pair of Trigger Sensor eyes fire each head as a container reaches it, so the labels land in the same place on every unit regardless of small gaps in the feed.

Orientation

For round containers the front and back faces are arbitrary unless something fixes the angle, so many of these machines add an Orientation Station station. There a Turning Belt spins the container in place while a Registration Camera watches for a printed registration mark, a mould seam, or a handle. When the mark is found, the Turn Servo stops the turn so the chosen face points at the front head. Backing Roller idlers hold the container against the turning belt. Without orientation the machine still works on flat or oval bottles whose shape sets the angle, but round bottles need this step to keep the front label centered on the front.

The two label heads

Both heads work the same way and run on the pressure-sensitive principle, so there is no glue pot to maintain. The Front Label Head unwinds labels from a reel on its Label Reel Hub hub, holds web tension with a Web Dancer, and peels each label off the backing at a sharp Peel Beak. The Web Drive Roller roller feeds exactly one label per cycle, a Gap Sensor finds the gap between labels to register the feed, and the spent liner winds onto the Backing Rewind. A sponge Application Roller rolls the label onto the moving container. The Back Label Head mirrors all of this on the far side with its own Label Reel Hub, Peel Beak, and Application Roller, applying the back label opposite the front.

Pressing and smoothing

Once both labels are tacked on, they must be seated firmly with no lifted corners or trapped air. The Wipe and Press Station station uses a Front Wipe Brush brush and a Back Wipe Brush brush, one on each side, to lay the labels down, followed by sprung Press Roller wheels that press them tight against flat faces. Coil Spring pressure lets the rollers follow the container surface so the same setup handles a range of widths.

Control and changeover

The two heads must fire at exactly the right offset from each trigger, so the Drive and Control runs a Conveyor Gearmotor with a Gearbox Housing for conveyor speed, a Line Encoder giving both heads a shared position reference, and a Motion Controller that applies a stored offset per recipe. The operator selects a product on the Touchscreen HMI, which recalls label length, offset, and speed for that container. The Electrical Cabinet cabinet holds the Power Supply, one Servo Drive per servo axis, and the Emergency Stop safety circuit. Changeover is mostly recipe driven, with a few mechanical adjustments to side-belt width and head height.

Use and variants

Front-and-back labelers fit cosmetic, food, beverage, and chemical lines where two distinct labels are the norm. The pressure-sensitive method gives crisp clear-film labels and fast changeovers, at a higher label cost than the cold glue used in a Wrap-Around Labeling Machine. Simpler versions drop the Orientation Station station and label only flat-sided bottles; fuller ones add wrap-around, top, and tamper-seal heads on the same frame so one machine can apply four or more labels per container. Throughput is lower than a true wrap-around machine because each container is held still rather than rolled continuously, but the flexibility to label any face of almost any shape is what keeps these machines common on mixed-product lines.
